Replacing the beloved "R107" in 1989, the new "R129" generation of
the Mercedes-Benz SL-Class would continue to lead the automaker
into the new millennium. The styling was revised by Bruno Sacco and
a completely new V8 engine was developed as well. Replacing the
"M117," the 5.0-liter "M119" delivered 322 horsepower with a
lighter-weight design improving handling characteristics. Comfort
and conveniences abounded, from automatic climate control to the
fully power-operated soft-top. Today, these cars have aged
gracefully into their role as a beloved youngtimer classic that
still offers lovely modern amenities.
This 1991 Mercedes-Benz 500 SL was ordered new in Pearl Blue
Metallic (348) with a complimentary Blue leather (272) interior. As
an early 1991 model, it features the two-tone "Sacco panels," 16
inch "Gullideckel" wheels, and a matching blue leather steering
wheel. Powering the SL is a 5.0-liter "M119" V8 mated to a
four-speed automatic transmission. The clever automatic dampening
and self-leveling suspension system (ASD) is paired with automatic
skid control (ASR) to ensure optimal driving pleasure with high
safety reserves maintained during challenging road conditions.
Equipped with a power-folding soft top and a color-keyed removable
hard top, this 500 SL combines the personality of three distinct
cars into one. With the hard top in place, the car becomes an
intimate coupe. Upon its removal, the SL takes on an open-air
personality with its top lowered, or in 30 seconds and the touch of
a single button, the power-folding Dark Blue soft top provides
immediate shelter from the weather.
Today this 1992 Mercedes-Benz 500 SL remains in excellent condition
as a result of its remarkably low 13,059 miles at the time of
cataloging. Recent service work from June 2022 is reported to
include the replacement of the hood pad insulation, spark plugs,
distributor cap, rotor, shifter bushings, and softtop hydraulic
cylinders. With its front fender-mounted air vents harkening back
to the illustrious 300 SL Gullwing Coupe, this highly original 500
SL is a modern classic, a welcome addition to any burgeoning
collection.
