2009 Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG in Amelia Island, Florida
Developed by the AMG Performance Studio, the SL 65 AMG Black Series
is the third Black Series model produced by Mercedes-Benz's AMG
division and is considered the ultimate high-performance
Mercedes-Benz, with no compromises. One of 350 world-wide, only 175
of these models were designated for the United States when new.
This SL 65 AMG Black Series was one of those highly sought-after
175 cars and was ordered new in Tenorite Gray Metallic. Building on
the structure of the stock SL 65, the Black Series features unique
carbon fiber composite body panels, with a speed-sensitive
carbon-fiber rear spoiler, a rear diffuser, including muscularly
flared fenders, a rear apron with diffuser fins, and a retractable
rear spoiler. Additionally, the heavy retractable hardtop of the
stock SL 65 was replaced with a lightweight, fixed bonded roof with
an integrated roll bar, resulting in a weight reduction of 551
pounds.
The SL 65 AMG Black Series was equipped with a hand-built AMG
6.0-liter, twin-turbocharged V12 engine, which had an AMG sports
exhaust and optimized airflow tubing mated to a paddle-shifted AMG
Speed-shift Plus five-speed automatic transmission. As per the
factory specifications, this engine produced 670 horsepower and a
remarkable 738 foot-pounds of torque. The manufacturer boasted that
the car could go from zero to 60 mph in just 3.8 seconds, with the
turbocharged power delivering a massive thrust initially and then a
rush of smooth, controlled speed on its way to a top speed limited
to 199 miles per hour. Bringing the car to a rapid halt are
upgraded brakes with larger diameter slotted and drilled rotors
with AMG-branded six-piston front and four-piston rear calipers
concealed behind staggered 19- and 20-inch AMG twin-spoke forged
alloy wheels.
The SL 65 AMG Black Series is not all brute force. The interior is
trimmed in AMG Exclusive Nappa leather with Alcantara and carbon
fiber trim throughout. Slipping into the power-adjustable
multi-contour sport seats with contrast stitching along with a
matching dashboard, door panels, and carpeting, the driver is
welcomed by a smaller diameter flat-bottom leather-wrapped steering
wheel. The carbon fiber and leather-wrapped gear selector denotes
the rarity of this model as one of just 175 examples. Amenities for
those lucky enough to experience this Black Series include
seat-position memory, massagers, dual-zone automatic climate
control, COMAND infotainment with navigation, Keyless-Go, and a
Harman Kardon LOGIC7 sound system with an in-dash six-disc CD
changer with satellite radio connectivity.
As presented today, this 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG Black Series
remains in splendid condition, having covered just 7,624 miles at
the time of cataloging, and is accompanied by its owner's manual,
first aid kit, and a clean CARFAX Vehicle History Report.
