For Sale at Auction: 1984 Volkswagen Van in Amelia Island, Florida
Volkswagen has a rich history of producing vans that can be easily
configured to meet the needs of those who require space, utility,
and style. It was no surprise when they teamed up with Westfalia to
create a camper version of their Vanagon. The original Westfalia
transformed the Vanagon into a camper by adding a raisable roof,
which allowed travelers to take their homes with them almost
anywhere they went. The Westfalia has gained a loyal following of
enthusiasts who love to restore and modify them with modern
amenities, and the current owner of this 1984 Westfalia has done
just that.
In late 2014, this Volkswagen was sent to GoWesty of Los Osos,
California, for a complete restoration. Beginning with the
mechanicals, by far the most significant improvement to its
usability is the installation of GoWesty's 2,700 cc "Waterboxer"
engine that provides 80 percent more performance than the original,
rated at 162 horsepower and 197 ft-lbs of torque. This increased
performance had a cascading effect through the rest of the
mechanical aspects as the transmission was upgraded with a locking
differential. New bushings, shocks, and progressive rate springs
renewed the suspension. New front spindles were installed to
accommodate the bigger front brakes needed to quell the newfound
power.
Finished in eye-catching Sage Green, the body was stripped to a
bare shell before it was refinished in its current livery with
black textured paint on the lower portion. The interior was
restored with vibrant green plaid fabric on the seating surfaces
and door panels, a perfect complement to the green exterior. When
parked, the roof can be raised, allowing for full enjoyment of the
interior amenities. The kitchenette has been restored with a
two-burner gas stove, a sink with a 13 gallon water capacity, and
an Engel combination refrigerator/freezer. The center row of seats
can be removed for more space on the side and also serves as the
ideal place to sit with the side-mounted awning extended.
Having only covered approximately 600 miles since the completion of
its restoration, this 1984 Volkswagen Vanagon "GoWesty" Westfalia
remains in fantastic condition. With the perfect blend of classic
design, modern features, and functionality, it is sure to attract
tremendous attention, whether on the highway, byroad, or at the
campsite!
