This 1965 Oldsmobile Cutlass 442 Convertible is a wonderfully
restored, well-documented Real Deal 4-4-2 convertible! In 1964,
Oldsmobile's GM sister brand changed the course of automotive
history when Pontiac released its performance-oriented GTO package
and kicked off what would become the muscle car era. Of course,
muscle car aficionados know that the muscle car was born when
Pontiac took mid-size car and placed its large 389 cubic inch V8
into it with the GTO package. In an effort to stay on pace with
Pontiac, Oldsmobile repackaged its lesser-known "Police Pursuit"
package into its own new performance-oriented package, the "4-4-2"
which was released in the middle of 1964 on the F-85/Cutlass
midsize platform. In its initial year, 4-4-2 stood for a 4 barrel
carburetor, 4 on the floor 4 speed manual transmission, and 2
(dual) exhausts. The 442 package also included a 330 cubic inch V8
along with heavier duty suspension and cooling components. The
following year in 1965, Oldsmobile replaced the 330 V8 with a
larger 400 cubic inch V8 and made an automatic transmission
available in the 442. When Oldsmobile made these changes however,
it was also changed what 4-4-2 stood for; so, in 1965, 442 stood
for a 400 V8, 4 barrel carburetor, and dual exhaust. Style-wise,
the 1965 442 was largely unchanged from the '64 model however Olds
did add a pair of faux air scoops on the rear quarters, removed a
piece of chrome trim at the beltline, and added a chrome air
cleaner atop the new 400 CID V8. By 1965, muscle cars began to gain
traction among consumers and Oldsmobile ended up building 25,003
models with the 4-4-2 performance package in '65. This particular
example comes to us from a southern-based owner along with the
window sticker and protect-o-plate. Powering this '65 Cutlass 442
is a 400 cubic inch V8 engine fed by a single 4 barrel carburetor
that together were said to have created a whopping 345 horsepower
when new. The 400 V8 is backed by a 4 speed manual transmission
that makes this Olds muscle car an absolute blast to drive! Exhaust
exits this 442's powerplant via a dual exhaust setup that generates
a fantastic throaty sound out of the rear tailpipes. Riding on a
set of redline radial tires mounted on white painted steel wheels
finished off with chrome wheelcovers, this 1965 Oldsmobile has a
great look and even better ride. A driver's side mirror is a
welcome addition since it makes squeezing in or out of a tight
parking space much easier. The black vinyl power convertible top
looks great and it goes up and down with the simple flick of a
switch. The exterior of this '65 Cutlass 442 has been correctly
refinished in beautiful Provincial White paint completing the
exterior look of this muscle car. The interior of this 1965
Oldsmobile Cutlass 442 Convertible is absolutely stunning! The
front bucket seats and rear bench seat have been correctly
reupholstered in beautiful black vinyl. The matching door panels,
black carpeting, black padded dash, and steering wheel are all in
great shape and all appear to remain in their stock configuration.
The instrument cluster is equipped with a 120 MPH speedometer and
fuel gauge, along with indicator lights for the generator, engine
temperature, and oil pressure. The dash is finished off with a
cigarette lighter, ashtray, and locking glovebox. Whether you're
adding to your existing collection of muscle cars or you're buying
your very first classic car, this 1965 Oldsmobile Cutlass 442
Convertible would make a wonderful choice. Give Ellingson's a call
