HIGHLIGHTS: Real-deal period-built '50s street rod! Owned by NASCAR
legend and former President of Penske Racing South Don Miller! 350
Chevy V8 and TH350 trans! Factory convertible turned chopped
custom! HISTORY: According to Don Miller, this car was customized
in Ohio in 1959/1960 by a builder named Bax Brown. This is when the
car was customized with a chop, frenched lights, and painted
Honduras Maroon. It was repainted once in the 1970s, and the Ford
flathead engine was swapped out for a Chevrolet 350 in the 1980s.
After changing hands a few times, this car has been owned by Don
Miller for over 10 years. BODY OVERVIEW: The body on this 1941
Mercury is clean, straight, and has been kept up. When this vehicle
was customized, someone clearly took their time with it by
retaining the convertible top mechanisms. Not an easy feat when
doing a chop on a convertible! This car was originally customized
in 1959, and refreshed in the 1970s and 1980s, so it does have some
minor imperfections that come with age. PAINT CONDITION OVERVIEW:
After a repaint in 1970 in Honduras Maroon, the paint is still in
nice overall condition. There are very few paint imperfections, and
these are the minor types of imperfections that appear after this
many years of use. The paint has a nice shine, and looks pretty
good for being 30+ years old! INTERIOR CONDITION OVERVIEW: The red
and white custom interior is in great shape, and the majority of
the interior is believed to be original from 1960 when the
customization was completed. There are some components that have
been added since the original customization, including the front
seat, steering wheel & column, and stereo which all appear to be
additions from the 1970s/1980s. This car even has air conditioning
and power windows! MECHANICAL OVERVIEW: Under the hood is a
Chevrolet 350 with an Edelbrock Trans Am intake manifold and a
4-barrel carburetor. The 350 is hooked up to a TH350 transmission,
which was installed in the 1980s at the same time as the engine.
Other notable mechanical features include a 1960 Ford Thunderbird
9" rear w/ 3.50 rear gears, front disc brakes, and Fatman
independent front suspension. Power rack and pinion steering on a
GM tilt column make handling comfortable. Last but not least, this
puppy has that classic street rod rumble courtesy of dual glasspack
mufflers. WHAT YOU'LL LOVE ABOUT THIS CAR: How timeless it is!
Street rods have a tendency to look dated fairly rapidly, but this
one has a certain look that doesn't seem to date it. WHAT YOU MIGHT
HATE ABOUT THIS CAR: This car is a combination of a lot of parts
from different cars---done the way true street rods were! If you're
looking for a car built with $100,000 worth of top-shelf, brand
name parts, this is not the car for you. DOES IT NEED ANYTHING?
Being that this is a car that hasn't been seeing daily use while in
Don's collection, it has been quite some time since it had a new
set of tires installed. While the whitewall tires on it now hold
air just fine and have plenty of tread, they appear to be older and
may need to be replaced if the new owner intends to do heavy
driving. Additionally, the air conditioning should be serviced.
WHAT BUYER IS LOOKING FOR THIS CAR? This 1941 Mercury convertible
is for the buyer who wants to finally own that street rod they
never got around to building, or for someone wanting to relive the
"good old days" in a cool custom rod. This car is waiting for a new
owner who can appreciate the style and history! Contact Rare Rides
