This 1966 Charger was acquired by the current owner in late 2013 as
a very solid, nicely maintained car. Originally a big block (361)
car, by this time it had the typical RV 440 swap. In the spring of
2014, the car was mechanically stripped down, and Front and Rear
suspension from Reilly Motorsports was fitted, with Viking shocks
and springs tuned for Touring. Brakes are Wilwood on all 4 corners,
with 6 piston Front and 4 piston rear calipers working with 14"
rotors in the front and 13" in the rear. On the pedal is a Wilwood
master cylinder with power assist via hydraboost from Hydratech.
This car has power steering (using an LS1 style pump for easy
maintenance), power brakes and air conditioning. AC uses factory 66
Charger vents on the dash, adapted to the formerly heat only car.
Compressor is the factory unit from the 6.4 Hemi. Important for the
accessories and maintenance, the factory 6.4 belt is retained, on
the off chance there's a failure it is easy to source. Engine
itself was sourced from a wrecked nearly new Jeep Grand Cherokee
SRT, and is a low mileage 6.4 HEMI unit. Engine control is by
HotWire auto, using a factory computer and wiring isolated from the
original car with its own fuse blocks. This is connected to a
recently rebuilt 727 Torqueflite supplied by Bouchillon Performance
with a slightly higher stall converter. Behind that is a Gear
Vendors overdrive unit, with both the "automatic" and manual
engagement options, the switch concealed in the dash ashtray. Rear
gear is a 3.90, with an Eaton Truetrack. Exhaust is via ceramic
coated TTI headers into a TTI 2.5 Exhaust system in the factory
style. The former cigarette lighter now controls exhaust cutouts
with a flick of the wrist for extra amusement. New fuel tank, and
an Aeromotive in-tank pump run via an easy to maintain
Corvette-style filter/regulator to supply fuel. Dual electric fans
are managed by a controller from Delta Current Control, and keep
the engine cool (and air conditioning happy) in all conditions.
This car has done 5 Hot Rod Power tour events, and is a
comfortable, fast, good handling cruiser. Some suspension and
tweaks would make it a better handling car, but it's always been
used for covering miles. For those used to the 66/67 Charger, the
headlamps and tail lamps work as intended. Interior is in good
original shape, new carpets were in the plans but never procured or
fitted. Car includes a very rare complete set of restored and
rechromed dash plastics, never fitted. Under the drivers seat is a
concealed stereo with remote, a single stereo speaker in the dash
and a removable speaker box in the rear for those road trips. The
car has won numerous local awards, and got the "Wildcard" trophy at
the inaugural Caffeine and Octane At The Beach event. The gear
vendors install was featured in Chrysler Power magazine, and the
car can be seen in many years of Power Tour coverage by Hot Rod
Magazine over the years, including a pick as one of Kenny Wayne
Shepherds favorites. . https://fb.watch/pPpRORakkp/?
