For Sale: 1948 Chevrolet Stylemaster in Morgantown, Pennsylvania

Vehicle Description

1948 Chevrolet Stylemaster 2 Door Town Sedan

In the late 1940's a 4-door sedan was somewhat of a status symbol. A larger car meant success, and a bigger family obviously would cost more money, and you would need a larger vehicle to haul this family around. So, for a mere 3 years, Chevrolet produced the Stylemaster series, in a coupe, sedan and woody wagon. Low numbers and high cost foiled this effort for 1949, so few examples remain, most suffering the ravages of time, and weather.

For consignment, a 2-door Town Sedan from the bowtie company in 1948 Stylemaster form. This car is in nice older restoration condition, has an inline 6 cylinder engine under the hood, a nicely redone interior and bleeds 40's style. Showing well on the exterior thanks to being garage kept, and with post war excessive use of chrome and large pontoon fenders, roomy interior and throw in some art deco styling and advantage you!

Note: While this car comes with a clean and clear Pennsylvania title, there is prior salvage branding.

Exterior
Bathed in Lake Como Blue Metallic paint that is nice, shiny and mostly free from any inclusions, we do see some areas of paint cracking and crazing, and some rust where trimmings meet the body. Also, some areas of slight overspray drip are seen. The chrome trimmings remain mostly bright and shiny with some early signs of fading on the chrome grille bars. Clear lens fog lights have been added and flank large wide horizontal bars that make up the grille they front. The steel is straight and gaps, the fairly well minded, and the original charm of the rounded bulbous looking hood and hanging side fenders with some chrome trimmings have been retained. The running board is about to go away, and with the turn of the decade it totally will, but this car still has small running boards connecting the fenders which are highlighted by stainless rocker trimmings. On the back a nicely rounded trunk line melts into 1 unit with the rear quarters and a shiny curved bumper below frames the bottom. Chevrolet badged dog dish moon caps are on all 4 corners covering black steel wheels and are wrapped in wide whitewall tires.

Interior
A swing of the doors and we see the blue painted door sills which border smooth gray broadcloth covered panels. These are dressed to the nines with chrome cranks and actuators with aged bakelite escutcheons and knobs. Below is a darker gray strip of carpeting. The seats covered in a black and gray small checked pattern broadcloth. The front split back bench is overstuffed and covered also with the small check black and gray. A rear bench sports the same pattern and appears to have never been sat in but does offer plenty of legroom and armrests. Gray carpet floods the floors, and it appears as new and a light cream headliner has been installed. This headliner shows some wrinkles on the C pillar surrounding the rear glass. Upfront a blue painted metal dash is appearing original and looking nice and aged with no real damage. Now within the chromed panels and horizontal ribs are some new Dolphin gauges with a large speedo in the center. Moving across more horizontal ribs and a corresponding round clock on the passengers side. Below is a panel with a few knobs and pulls and an aftermarket AM/FM radio. An dark blue bakelite 3 spoke steering wheel is large and in front of the dash, and has a cloisonne embedded Chevrolet badge in the center which is looking good.

Drivetrain
In what appears to be a nicely aged engine bay lies a light blue painted 235.5ci inline 6-cylinder engine. This engine is circa 1955-57. A 1-barrel carburetor is beneath the oil bath air cleaner setup, and a 3-speed manual transmission is on back, with 4.11 rear gears for the axle. Wiring and hoses appear to be updated as well. The electrical system has been updated to a 12V system.

Undercarriage
Patina and very light areas surface rust cover nearly what is mostly black painted framing and floor pans with said remaining solid. No areas of invasive rust are noted and the lower inside of the doors are solid. Independent coil springs up front and leaf springs in the rear provide the ride and drum brakes are seen on all 4 corners. Single exhaust is noted and presents with only minor surface rusting on the pipes.

Drive-Ability
She started right up and ran smoothly. For a large car it accelerates nicely, and has decent brakes for drums. A fine experience, however, the wipers were did not wipe and the car pulled left when braking.

Despite some exterior paint faults, this car presents nicely on the body front, fit and finish are good, and engine and engine bay have been addressed in an earlier restoration. TLC will bring that exterior right back up to snuff, and you will be able to pile your family in and go for a Sunday drive...Remember those?? He's the boogie woogie bugle boy of company B.
