Vehicle Description
1947 Mercury Eight Custom
VIN: 799A1750762
The debut model of the new Mercury division of Ford Motor Company
was the Mercury Eight. It was produced across three generations
from 1939 to 1951 and served to establish Mercury's position
solidly between Ford and Lincoln. The second generation of the
Mercury Eight (1941-1948) adapted its own version of a Ford body.
With styling and engineering improvements, the Mercury Eight was
strongly identified as an upmarket Ford during this period.
The car presented at auction is a mild custom 2 door sedan model of
the 2nd generation Mercury Eight. Under current ownership since
2020, limited information is known as to its history including when
the restoration was completed.
Body - A solid body presents well with no visible rust showing in
the sheet metal. The car has been painted Emerald Green. With the
fender welts showing in chrome, the solid lines of the pre- and
immediate post War Mercury are on display. Chrome trim and badging
was removed from the car offering a very clean and unique look. The
car retains the front grill, running lights and headlight bezels in
chrome that all show well. With the front bumper removed, the
impressive chrome grill styling really stands out. The rear bumper
is painted to match the Emerald Green body. Windows all show well
as do the weather stripping.
Interior - Interior body panels match the Emerald Green exterior
attesting to the extent of the restoration on the car. Cougar
bucket seats have replaced the original bench seat and the rear
seat shows in black vinyl. The black carpet is in good condition
and new door panels provides a crisp look on the inside. The
restored steering wheel is a highlight of the interior and the
chrome horn ring proudly displays the famed Mercury logo of the
fleet-footed messenger of the gods of Greek Mythology.
Mechanical - The Flathead V8 runs well and the manual "three on the
tree" transmission shifts and moves the car as expected. An
aluminum radiator provides for efficient cooling and the electrical
system has been upgraded to 12 volt. Fuel is supplied by an
electric fuel pump and cast iron headers lead to dual exhaust
pipes.
Chassis - Front brakes have been upgraded to disc and all new brake
lines have been installed. Air bags control the ride height and
handling on the rear and Custom Wheels and Yokohama tires provides
a great stance for this custom Merc.
