The Ford Model T is not only the founding father of transportation
as we know it today but also one of the most popular vehicles of
all time with over 15 million variants produced over nearly 20
years. Perhaps even more impressively, at a point, nearly half of
all cars registered in the United States were Model Ts! Of these
Model T variants, most were closed Sedans and open Touring cars,
yet Ford smartly sold the Model T as a bare chassis as well,
capitalizing on the entrepreneurship of early 20th Century
Americans new to the automobile with a multitude of creative ideas
with which to use it. The Model T "Depot Hack" is one such variant,
built to transport a number of travelers to and from train stations
into newly growing city centers. The name of the model is derived
from "hackney," a charming term referring to a hired horse-drawn
vehicle. Wooden-bodied cars like this Depot Hack were viewed as
utilitarian vehicles, and as a result there was little concern
regarding their wear and tear making quality examples such as this
Model T Depot Hack from 1920 even more special.
Today, this Depot Hack continues to provide plenty of utility,
appropriately finished in black with running boards and striking
oak trim work with roll-down side curtains for weather protection.
Luggage is stored behind the passengers behind a fold-down
tailgate. Vintage automobiles are most enjoyable when shared with
others, and this Depot Hack excels in fostering that camaraderie.
Found in Georgia, it entered The Gregorie Neck Collection in 2011
as not only the earliest automotive example in the collection but
one of the most cheerful as well. With its undeniable appeal, it
would undoubtedly be a welcomed presence at any local car show or
Model T event across the country.
