Vehicle Description
1985 Mercedes-Benz 500SEC Hardtop
Mercedes-Benz has sold a number of automobiles with the "500" model
name, and the nomenclature usually refers to the 5.0L V8 engine
under the hood. Most of the "500" badged cars featuring this type
of engine are the various incarnations of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class
flagship sedan, making it synonymous with the "500" vernacular.
However, the engine and model number can also be found on other
nameplates such as the E-Class midsize sedan, CL-Class coupe, and
SL-Class roadster.
For consignment, a 1985 500SEC (S=S class, E=Einspritzung fuel
injection, and C Coupe). This car is a 2 owner car from Montana and
the paint presents with a few dents and dings, scratches and chips
and a few taped over repairs. It has a new leather interior and the
car is original and unrestored with 135,149 miles clocked on
it.
Exterior
Anthracite Gray Metallic bathes the exterior of this built like a
panzer tank coupe. This sis the middle of the 80's, so we are
firmly in the square and rectangle design era with a single square
inset headlight flanking a shiny tri-pointed star in the center of
a 2 tier chromed grille. Body matching Anthracite Gray is on the
chrome edge topped neoprene bumper. The quarter panels and doors
have nicely minded gaps and sport a below the mid level trim spear
and a gray lower rocker covering which has paint chip off and
showing some wear. On the back of the large spacious trunk we see
ribbed self cleaning tail lighting wrapping around the rear
quarters, and the 500SEC badge. 16-inch wheels have been polished
and have no center hub so the wheel nuts are exposed. These are
wrapped in 205/60R16 rubber from the 36th week of 2022.
Interior
The door panels for the interior have a mix of gray leather,
dimpled gray vinyl and gray carpeting along with some lacquered
burl wood inserts for the actuator and power seat adjuster. Nice
consignor stated newly recovered gray leather covers the wide
buckets and these are clean and like new. A rear bench is in the
same pattern and color. A gray plastic molded console is in the
center and this also has burl accenting where the shift lever is
located. There are also window toggles, a mirror joystick, seat
heater toggles and a dimmer for the dash. This burl panel is
cracking just a bit. As we visually move up to the dash we see more
burl panels within which is a Becker AM/FM/Cassette stereo and push
button climate controls. Moving further up we see a horizontal
panel with more burl to house the AC vents, ignition, and glovebox
lock. Just above are the sweep instruments staring at the driver
from under a gray squared off visored panel. The gray padded dash
top is slightly cracked. Cruise control and a sunroof is seen above
and below is gray carpeting slightly worn. Note, the trunk is also
carpeted and has some staining on it.
Drivetrain
Under the hood is a 5.0 liter V8 with Bosch K-Jetronic EFI and a
factory 4-speed automatic on back. The rear axle is a 2.24 version.
Stock exhaust is in and the engine bay shows some slight corrosion
on various cast parts.
Undercarriage
Plenty of road dirt covers the rust free steel unibody and floor
pans which are typical German engineered smooth panels covering
virtually everything. Independent suspension is all around and
power disc braking is on all 4 corners.
Drive-Ability
Our consignor states the car runs like a champ so I checked it out
and it does. It starts right up and cruised smoothly with smooth
acceleration and good cornering. The horn didn't honk, the AC blew
warm and the driver's side rear window was not working.
A gray on gray S class coupe looking very tasteful in the all gray
leather and gray exterior. Hop in to take a road trip. And we'll
have fun fun fun on the Autobahn..Schnell
