This 1989 BMW Z1 Roadster is finished in Top Red and showcases the brand’s numerous technological firsts, such as the use of full composite body panels, drop-down doors, and a multilink rear suspension, all fitted to a roadster with daring design that, at the time, was highly unexpected from the otherwise conservative Bavarian carmaker. This two-seater is all original and currently shows only 8,147 kilometers (5,157 miles).
This Z1 is powered by BMW’s naturally aspirated, M20B25 2.5-liter inline six-cylinder engine that features a single-overhead-cam, 12-valve design. With its Bosch Motronic 1.1 engine management system, it had European power ratings of 168 hp and 164 lb-ft of torque. In addition, the Getrag 260/5 five-speed manual transmission shifts smoothly.
This 1989 Z1 wears its original Top Red (A91) finish and the two-tone Gray/Dark Gray Leather (0300).The interior’s camouflage-pattern leather inserts and body-colored seat backs envelop the occupants in two deeply bolstered bucket seats. Behind the three-spoke leather steering wheel are four individual gauges mounted in the BMW tradition, with a prominent 7,000-rpm tachometer and a 240-kph speedometer.
Featuring a modified and widened version of the E30’s MacPherson strut front suspension along with an entirely new “Z-axle” independent rear suspension, the Z1’s innovative chassis was made of welded, hot-galvanized steel with a floor enhanced with additional steel and a “composite-fiber sandwich” for rigidity. The unique chassis also included four-wheel disc brakes. Factory seven-spoke alloy wheels are wrapped in Hankook Ventus Prime2 tires, sized 225/45R16 with 2015 date codes.
As one of very few Z1s believed to be in Canada, as they were never officially imported to the North American market, this desirable Top Red E30-based 1989 BMW Z1 Roadster, with low mileage, is seemingly the perfect companion to any discerning BMW collector with its many unique design and engineering achievements.
The CARFAX report shows no accident declarations over $2,000. Original registration history was in Florida, before being imported into British Columbia, Canada in February 2022.
