Vehicle Description
1988 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe
Myron E. Scott went to work for Chevrolet in 1937, as an assistant
director for the Public Relations department, where he was
responsible for photography of new cars, designing press kits,
graphics, and special events. He was also known for being the
creator of the All-American Soap Box Derby. After winning a contest
with 300 submissions, Myron thought the name Corvette rolled off
the tongue well and thought a tie to the fast strike ships called
"Corvettes" from World War II would appeal to the American men,
many who had served. This would go on to form the foundation for
the nautical names that would be applied to Corvettes and concepts
such as the Mako Shark and Sting Ray (later to be used as
Stingray).
For consignment a nice example of a 1988 Corvette which was a year
in which Corvette was celebrating its 35th Anniversary. Bathed in
Dark Red Metallic, this hardtop coupe and 350 cubes await your
command to fire up. Now is your chance to get into the classic car
game and you are starting near the top with this classic Corvette
from the late 80's.
Exterior
The "It" color for Corvettes, a Dark Red Metallic bathes the
fiberglass sculpted exterior. Badging is all correct, as well as
working hidden headlights. Black plastic trimming wraps entirely
around this car at the midline and creates a nice contrast to the
red. Black wheels add to the menacing look of the dark red and
other black accenting. On the back deck is a large greenhouse rear
glass. This rolls gently down to a small back deck and takes a
vertical dive downward for the tail and the round tail lights
deeply inset within the neoprene rear bumper and rear roll pan.
Quad exhaust tips are showing off at the bottom of this bumper.
Overall the paint and fiberglass remain in good condition.
Interior
Slightly used black carpet floods the floors and the back trunk
area, it is a bit faded but clean. Black bolstered and checkered
inset broadcloth buckets, showing as original, have minimal wear
cozy up to the center console and dash. A black center console
holds a black topped storage unit. This also houses the controls
for power windows, and exterior mirrors, shift lever for the
automatic transmission, climate control, AM/FM/Cassette radio, and
a data center with a screen to display information regarding gas
mileage, service warnings and other key components of the car. An
all digital cluster of gauges in colorful form all working like new
are fronted by a black rimmed rally style steering wheel. All
surfaces are slightly showing some wear and dirt. The headliner is
black and sags a bit.
Drivetrain
The stout 350ci V8 small block is topped by electronic tuned port
fuel injection and is backed by a 4 year old 700R4 4-speed
automatic transmission that shifts smoothly. The engine is very
clean and has little corrosion and nice shiny hoses and belts along
with some gold cast aluminum valve coverings. Our consignor stated
the top end of the engine was rebuilt 4 years ago. Save for a
little bit of road dirt on the underside of the wheel wells, it's
all clean under this hood.
Undercarriage
C4 suspension is clean, showing a slight patina on the aluminum
cast suspension. The unibody and floor pans are all very sound.
Power disc brakes are on all 4's.
Drive-Ability
A quick starter and good runner, this car presented with a nice
test ride, glued to the curves on the test track. The seats were
comfy, and the only things I noticed was the heater control light
did not light up, and the consignor states when starting up the
smog pump rattles but it did not do this for me.
We are in the game here with a nice looking and well cared for 35th
celebratory year "Vette". A real celebration in the total style of
the sporty car Harley Earl thought up 35 years earlier. And the
legend continues...Happy Anniversary!!
