The Bonneville Salt Flats are a densely packed salt pan in Tooele
County in northwestern Utah, United States. A remnant of the
Pleistocene Lake Bonneville, it is the largest of many salt flats
west of the Great Salt Lake. It is public land managed by the
Bureau of Land Management and is known for land speed records at
the Bonneville Speedway. Access to the Flats is open to the
public.
For consignment, a 1934 Ford pickup hot rod with a design and power
plant with thoughts of making a run on the salt flats. It's got all
the right stuff with no fenders or bumpers, fiberglass cab, Chevy
4.3 Vortec V6 with a performance cam and a TH350 tranny. A
removable soft top makes it even more desirable.
Exterior
This truck has the bones of a 34 pickup but has been shaved of the
bumpers and fenders. Steel and fiberglass mix and all are bathed in
black and all miles deep when you look at these panels. A nice
shield styled grille is centered on the dropped front suspension,
and just aft a cowled hood with a large V8 decal on its top. Vented
side cowls are on, and as we visually move black we see suicide
doors. The cabin is covered with a nice tan canvas convertible
removable top. In back is the steel black painted bed and sides.
The sides are straight and have an angled top edge to them. On the
bed next to the cab is a black painted diamond plate steel box. The
bed is oak and has wood center strips. On the back is a tailgate
with some chromed flat vertical ribs and a lower chromed bar.
Horizontal mounted teardrop tail lights are on a shaved of the
bumper rear flat roll pan. Dual exhaust tips peek out from the
bottom. 15-inch American Racing Salt Flat style wheels are on and
in front wrapped with 185/80R15's and in back larger
235/70R15's.
Interior
Rear hinged doors have an orange vinyl top sill edge and ivory tuck
and roll lowers with a black actuator. Inside is a bench seat, also
covered with orange and ivory, and it is very nicely preserved. A
rally steering wheel fronts an all black painted steel dash with a
machined aluminum swirl pattern instrument cluster backing in the
center. Instruments are vintage VDO cream faced and these have
brass bezels around them. A few knobs and pulls are there too.The
floors are covered with clean black carpeting and sides of toe
kicks are tuck and roll ivory vinyl. A Gennie shifter rises from
the center.
Drivetrain
A Chevrolet 4.3 liter V6 Vortec engine resides under the cowled
hood. It is fitted with a performance cam, aluminum heads and an
Edelbrock intake and 4-barrel carburetor. A TH350 3-speed automatic
trans is on back with a Ford 8.8 inch with 3.31 gears. Headers and
a Flowmaster exhaust are on for the exhale. This engine is very
buttoned up and has an electric fan to cool it down.
Undercarriage
A 1932 Ford provides the frame and it has an additional tubular
cross member. Mustang II provides the front suspension and for the
rear its a 4 link with coil overs. Manual disc brakes in front and
manual drums for the rear.
Drive-Ability
The rod fired right up and idled smoothly. After a brief warmup it
was bounding for the test track where I stretched its leg and it
did not disappoint. Good handling, easy steering and smooth gear
transitioning..automatically! All was working just swimmingly.
A nice steel and fiberglass '34 pickup and rodder with a powerful
4.3 liter V6 and auto tranny. So with this consignment not only can
you haul the goods but you can also haul ass!! Vroom vroom.
