A very special example of a very special Morgan model.
Only 433 built from 1950 through 1968, a `luxury` Morgan with many special features: windshield is part of the body, elaborate coachwork, larger rear hinged doors, straight door tops, a lot of interior wood (dash and area above dash), three position drop head top (top goes up with the top frame, area over driver/passenger can be furled back to act as a large sunroof), chrome over brass side curtains with sliding glass windows, flat bonnet top for quieter operation, a VERY Special Morgan.
We purchased the car from the estate of the original owner who purchased the car directly from the factory in 1962. And back and forth between his properties in South Carolina and California. When acquired by us, the aesthetics were absolute show quality: beautiful paint quality in Eggplant over very deep burgundy (almost black), new maroon leather seats, Wilton wool carpets bound in leather, new top, boot cover, and full tonneau (all in tan stayfast cloth). Same with chrome and trim.
Original cloth covered wiring harness is near perfect....AMAZING for a sixty year old car and probably indicative of the way this car was maintained. And all of the original gauges were recently rebuilt on the far side of $2,000.
BUT THERE IS MORE>>>>>>>when acquired the.engine seemed a bit tired and now just completely rebuilt, by our staff, new 89mm pistons and bores giving near 2.3 liters, ported and polished cylinder head, balanced bottom end, new clutch, new high output water pump, new oil pump. Completely rebuilt HS6 SU carbs, electronic ignition, AND a freshly rebuilt Moss gearbox. Throughout, the drivetrain has been expensively and freshly rebuilt.
More? A new aluminum radiator with shrouded electric cooling fan. Mechanical and electric fuel pumps. Front disc brakes with a new dual master cylinder (for a higher degree of safety than when new). Classic tripod headlights, new digital stereo with BlueTooth, and a super powerful modern heater providing heat comparable to a contemporary car.
But there is more......a custom made luggage rack, 12v/USB output under dash, new racing style reduction gear starter motor, a locking glove box door, new seat belts, battery cut off switch, new chrome wire wheels with new radial tires. on board battery maintainer, and one very special, probably unique addition.
Behind the seats of any Morgan 2 seater is a wood board that covers the battery box and back axle. In this car, the wood board is upholstered and folds in half and in the area behind the seats, a compartment upholstered in wool carpets, bound in leather, and beautifully done. IS IT a luxury compartment for one`s tools and equipment? Foot wells to allow two kids to sit in the back behind the seats? Truly a mystery and like nothing we have ever seen in ANY Morgan.
Needless to say, front suspension, steering, chassis, wood framing, sheet metal, etc. are all first rate. It is the most beautiful Morgan I have ever seen and, to my eye, resembles a pre War Bentley or other fine European car. When a three position drophead was referred to as a 'Sedanca DeVille.'
As a guess, the engine puts out around 110-120hp which offers a lot more performance than a contemporary MG. Parts are readily available and even the factory is a source for most parts.....incredible....even for a sixty year old car!
No expense was spared to prepare and offer a unique Morgan. Suitable for shows (a side note: was the ONLY Morgan selected to be displayed at the prestigious Greenwich concours, on the way home, with the fresh engine being broken in, cruised at 75-85 mph and it was quiet and refined, at least by Morgan standards), countryside driving, even distance touring....and with the excellent sealing top and side curtains and powerful heater, even in cold weather. Just finished and ready to drive anywhere (note: this car will not be in our showroom and can be seen only by appointment as it is currently being used by me and is sitting in my barn).
It is an extraordinary classic Morgan. (a note about color, at a recent show, we asked people for a description of the body color. And these were the responses....Aubergine, claret, maroon, wine, port, and as originally described to me, eggplant. Your pick). Oh, and yes, the chrome over brass side curtains with sliding windows are completely removable but, personally, I love the way they look mounted.
