The Plymouth Cambridge is a full-size automobile, produced by
Plymouth from 1951 until 1953. It was Plymouth's base-range base
model in its 1951 and 1952 lineups, along with the shorter
wheelbase Concord and the sole base model for 1953. When it was
introduced, it came with new features such as electric windshield
wipers and downdraft carburetors. It also had "Safe-guard" brakes
that had two hydraulic cylinders per front wheel instead of just
one. It replaced the Deluxe, and was replaced by the Plaza for
1954. The 1952 Plymouths looked similar to the prior models, with
minor changes including round hood medallions, a revised hood
ornament, and script instead of block letters on the nameplates.
The Cranbrook Belvedere was given new roof and paint
treatments.
For consignment, a stunning presentation of a not oft seen highly
original and very well preserved car. Our consignor states that the
83,209 miles showing on the odometer are likely original, however
this cannot be proven as the title reads mileage exempt, but one
look at the brighter than bright chrome and stainless, well
preserved interior and rust free body say those are original and
well cared for miles. With a beautiful Lido Green paint scheme,
ultra clean interior, and a clean engine bay, you'll be hard
pressed to find one of these models this clean or one at all for
that matter. So with that said, we proudly offer to you this
Plymouth Cambridge P23 sedan looking like it just rolled out of the
showroom in 1952.
Exterior
A beautiful coat of shining paint in a single respray form of Lido
Green adorns the exterior straight steel panels of this massive
pontoon sided car. All chrome on this car is beautifully preserved,
and even the door handles retain their escutcheon guards to protect
the body from errant keys or fingernails. We need to look closely
and appreciate not only the Mayflower cloisonne badge on the hood,
but also the swept back sailing ship hood ornament and Plymouth
badge hovering just below. Single headlights fit nicely into the
front quarters and flank the open mouth 3 tiered grille all in
chrome on the sides. The lower bumper and a big front chromed
grille are spotless as are the add on bumperettes. All window trim
is buttoned up and just beautiful as is the lightly tinted glass
and slightly bulbous roof line of the passenger compartment. We are
nearing the end of the pontoon fender styling age with slab sided
front fenders and slightly outcropped pontoon rear fenders with
Cambridge script emblems in the front along with a short trim spear
that pauses at the 4 doors then picks up again a bit lower on the
rear fenders. Out back is another pristing guarded bumper hovering
below V-shaped tail lights on the fender tails and inboard chrome
trimmed reverse lights Wide white 15-inch tires wrap Plymouth
badged wheel covers which are excellent. Overall, the exterior of
this car is extremely fine in presentation with nary a flaw to be
found in the miles deep finish.
Interior
A swing of any of the 4 doors and we are in tan stitched broadcloth
heaven with dark green steel sills and brown vinyl lowers. The door
panels remain original with only light wear and staining, as do the
2 large benches which stretch within the door panel confines and
are a stain and tear free mix of striped tan broadcloth and
burgundy vinyl for the tubs and piping. The chrome window cranks
and door releases are all in remarkably good condition as is the
armrest with its striped broadcloth trimming, adding just a bit of
contrast to the otherwise tan field. The all-steel dash is draped
in taupe paint and has a panel in front of the driver of chrome
bezeled glass covered gauges which are as clean as a whistle.
Additionally the interior dash abounds with cleanliness and chrome
for the Mayflower badged radio delete panel, heater/defroster
controls and beautiful fronting steering wheel. Black ribbed rubber
flooring is up front and in the back a speckled gray carpeted mat
covers the clean tan carpeting underneath. The factory installed
camel tan mohair headliner is in and finishes off this excellently
preserved interior space.
Drivetrain
A 217.8ci in-line flathead 6-cylinder in just clean and pristine
condition resides under the hood and can be verified as original
and correct to the car. A 1-barrel carburetor feeds this engine,
and a 3-speed manual transmission is strapped to the back of the
engine. 3.90 gears for the rear, and we are all good to go.
Ensuring proper fuel delivery is a new fuel tank and filter and the
engine was recently treated to a tune up and oil change.
Undercarriage
Some surface rust is seen on the usual iron suspects such as
suspension, interior wheels, and a bit of the frame, but all remain
structurally sound. Some surface rust also in the rocker area, but
where body hangers meet the body is all clear. Independent coil
spring suspension for the front and leaf springs on the rear are
noted as are 4-wheel drum brakes. A stock style single exhaust
handles spent fossil removal with ease and ends with a single
chrome tip under the rear bumper.
Drive-Ability
I deferred to our test driver for this one and he reported a quick
start, smooth idle, and much comfortable ease of operation. Not a
fireball in the acceleration department, but then again it is a
family cruiser, which it handles just perfectly. A clean driver
with no smoke and all functional save for the wipers that wouldn't
wipe.
Before you is a great example of a rarely seen model year and car,
with nearly all features functional, beautiful exterior paint and
chrome, snazzy interior, and smooth running engine and drivetrain.
Even down to the trunk interior things are preserved so well one
would think they were back in 1952. A well-kept example ready to
turn the key and enjoy immediately.
