Vehicle Description
1987 BMW 535i Sedan
The BMW 5 Series is an executive car manufactured and marketed by
BMW since 1972, succeeding the New Class Sedans, and currently in
its seventh generation. The E28 is the second generation of 5
Series, manufactured for model years 1981-1988 as a sedan. It was
initially offered with petrol four-cylinder and six-cylinder
engines. The I designation signifies that the car runs on
gasoline.
For consignment, a BMW 535-I series 4 door sedan in very well kept
condition. This executive coach is from the West Coast and sports
some upgrades within its white skin. These include but are not
limited to H&R lowering springs, Bilstein shocks, 15-inch BBS
Style 5 wheels, Ventus Noble 2 tires, and an aftermarket AM/FM/CD
stereo. All maintenance was done regularly during this consignor's
short time of possession.
Exterior
The factory design remains and here we see a raked inward blackened
grille with dual headlights on either side and a kidney bean shaped
chromed center. A shiny bumper is below and has a black band
protecting its outer mid edge. Fog lights are mounted below this
bumper to guide your way on those foggy nights. White painted steel
abounds and has a few chips and scratches throughout the well
minded gap slabs of the sides and doors as well as the hood. The
roof has a power sunroof and clear glass for the passenger
compartment. The back of the car uses a standard trunk design with
a small roll as it descends to the tail lighting which is dual
strips in horizontal format. Another shiny bumper brings up the
rear and it too has the rubber band around it. 15-inch BBS style
cast spoked wheels are all around and show areas on the edges where
they have been curbed.
Interior
Entree vous or should I say Treten Sie in.....where we see black
molded vinyl uppers, blue molded framing and a perforated vinyl
padded insert with this frame of vinyl. An armrest/pull and
actuator is on the perforated padding. 2 wide bodied medium high
back buckets draped in dark blue leather have some light tuck and
roll with stitching and show some wear as good quality leather
tends to do with use. There are no cracks or gaps, just some folds.
In the center console are the power window buttons and the shifter.
In back is a wide 2 plus 2 bench with a fold down armrest also in
blue padded leather. These chairs float on blue carpeting slightly
faded in front. The dash is black vinyl and has an ovoid dash
cluster with round gauges underneath an arched eyebrow. A center
control panel is above the console and here is an aftermarket
AM/FM/CD radio and the climate controls. A blue vinyl glove box and
wide padded black dash top is in front of the passenger. A gray
headliner in felted broadcloth is hanging tightly above and does a
wonderful job of framing the power sunroof.
Drivetrain
Under the age hood we see the 3.4 liter inline 6 cylinder engine
with a recent valve adjustment according to the consignor. It has
EFI and a 5-speed Getrag 265 manual transmission. On the back is a
3.25 rear axle to handle the tire turning duties. Save for
insulation on the underside of the hood things are fairly clean
with slight corrosion on the aluminum parts around the engine.
Undercarriage
Underneath we see plenty of textured and faded undercoating. Some
road dirt is within the cracks and crevices of the texturing. No
real rust, (even surface rust), is seen. Independent 4 wheel
Macpherson strut suspension is all around and it works with H&R
lowering springs and Bilstein shocks to keep this sedan glued to
the road like a cat on carpet. Power disc brakes are on all 4
corners and the factory style exhaust handles the exhale with
ease.
Drive-Ability
The car fired right up and on the test track performed beautifully.
Here it exhibited good handling, nice acceleration, and was a comfy
cruiser. I noticed the heater blower would not blow and the
driver's power mirror was still and unadjustable.
Harken back to the luxury of 1987 where cars could cruise on the
Autobahn at a cool 140mph all day and expensive ones even faster.
Think of it literally like an airplane in the ground. Here in the
USA you would have a difficult time doing that but people realized
and wanted German engineering and quality so they bought these
luxury liners. This one is a driver quality car with no rust and
still holds its own. Fahrvergngen.
