While we can all probably agree that the mid-to-late 1970s weren't
exactly the Golden Age of muscle cars... or cars of any kind for
that matter. But, even in a decade full of dysfunctional,
unimpressive machines, there are still a few bright spots that can
be pointed out as keepers of the faith and harbingers of the
excitement to come. Quite literally, and possibly figuratively,
none of those spots are brighter than this Firethorn red-on-red
1977 Oldsmobile Cutlass 442.
While no window sticker or build sheet is available, all signs
point to the fact that this is more than likely a legit 442. In
1977, there were 11,649 of these hot rods built, and out of that
group, a mere 350 were equipped with the optional 403 cubic-inch
big block V-8. While the '70s didn't produce high horsepower
numbers thanks to the newly incorporated SAE net power standards,
this 185 hp engine represented the last motor bigger than a 350
that the 442 would ever see underhood.
While the original "4-4-2" was derived from the car's four-barrel
carb, four-speed transmission, and dual exhausts, this car might be
called a 4-3-2 since it sports a three-speed TH350 automatic
transmission backing up that big numbers-matching motor, while the
stock ten-bolt rear sends power out to a set of 15-inch rims
wrapped in 225/70R-15 Goodyear Eagle GA rubber.
Inside this fiery phenom, you'll sink into the plush vinyl bucket
seats up front, with room for two full-sized adults in the back.
The 442's unique offset dual gauge setup is flanked by light
controls to the left and HVAC operations to the right. The red
two-spoke steering wheel is easy to operate thanks to the optional
power steering. The four-link coil spring rear and independent
front suspension set the perfect ride height while front power disc
brakes work in conjunction with rear power drums to keep things
under control.
*403 V8
*1 of 350 made
*Numbers matching
*TH350 auto
*Firethorn Metallic
*Power brakes
*NASCAR inspired style
*Last year for a big block
*Power steering
*Real head turner
The '70s may not get much credit for producing powerhouses, this
1977 Olds Cutlass 442 stands in direct contrast with that
sentiment. With its NASCAR-inspired front-end aerodynamics
exclusive to this year, there is no better car to add to your
collection than one of the true bright spots of an entire decade.
