Vehicle Description
1964 Chevrolet Impala SS Hardtop
The 3rd generation Impala ran from 1961-1964 and would end up being
one of the most important American cars to date. These were the
game changing years in which the Super Sport and the world famous
409 engines were released. The SS Impala played an integral role in
formulating what we now know as the original muscle cars.
Here in the corridors of the Classic Auto Mall we have all kinds of
cars with all kinds of purposes. Some classics to be shown, others
to be driven, and others to do both. Here for consignment we have a
classic that exemplifies early muscle cars in the form of a great
running and driving 1964 Impala SS hardtop. It is to be driven and
should be shown,especially with the era-correct V8 and 4-speed
under the hood. Read on!
Exterior
From its chromed bezel dual headlight flanking an egg crate grille,
added fog lights and lower wrap around bumper, to the white painted
spear running along the crease at its belt line, and the dual sets
of three taillights within more aluminum trim, a silver surround,
and snappy chrome lower bumper, this car sports plenty of nice
brite-work, and chrome to feast your eyes on. Wrap-around chrome
window surrounds, cursive "Impala SS" badging with the galloping
impala in a circle, and the crossed flags badge on both front
quarter panels shine brightly against its medium blue metallic
paint. This paint is beautifully applied and has very little within
it to criticize save for a few minor inclusions and small bubbles.
Covering the passengers is a linedsteel roof in blue, giving the
appearance of somewhat of a convertible/removable hardtop
design, but trust me folks, it's a fixed hardtop roof. All of the
lines and gaps on this car are laser straight, and it could have
been just driven off the showroom floor back in 1964 this
restoration is that good on the exterior! Polished and
chromed15-inch Keystone Klassic wheels are wrapped with thin white
wall sided tires for that perfect day 2 look.
Interior
As we swing open the 1 of 2 doors on this hardtop, we are met with
door panels wearing blue vinyl that is tucked and rolled on the
uppers, and has a smooth blue vinyl center with a snazzy SS badge,
then carpeting below. A Y pattern is created with the chrome
delineating trimmings that thins in the center for the armrest and
it's just perfectly content here. As we move inside 2 nicely
presenting wide buckets, also in blue vinyl, are framed in chrome
and flank a center console that is very thin, shoehorned between
the buckets, and reach no further than the seats backs. The top of
the console is covered with a houndstooth machined aluminum pattern
and houses the white ball topped Hurst shifter. As the console
narrows when it gets under the dash it ducks down for an
aftermarket duo of gauges mounted below the dash. A near perfect
dash, all steel in the factory Daytona Blue with original gauges is
a multi-level design housing the GM instruments. Another machined
houndstooth pattern aluminum strip rust across the bottom of the
dash and fronting all this an original steering wheel in very good
condition. The steering column now has a top mounted Stewart Warner
aftermarket tachometer. Last but not least, a clean and tight light
blue vinyl headliner is above and blue carpeting is covering the
floors. More evidence of a cleanly performed restoration here.
Drivetrain
A non-original to this car 1964 through 1967, (casting number
3858180 and T0409HC stamping), 327ci V8 is painted the GM
orange/red block sits in a fully restored but slightly dusty and
patined engine bay. A single 4-barrel Edelbrock carb and Edelbrock
intake manifold are topped with a circular chromed air cleaner
covering to handle the fuel and air delivery. This engine presents
beautifully, and even the master cylinder has been converted to the
dual reservoir type for extra safety. Muncie provides the M20
4-speed manual transmission that is also era correct and the final
drive is 3.08. A blue ribbon award under this hood.
Undercarriage
Drum brakes are noted all around within a slightly aged and patined
environment made up of black steel. The rockers are solid and laser
straight with a liberal amount of undercoating throughout. The
floor pans and toe kicks are also sound and independent coil
springs are upfront and a 4 link with coil springs is now on back
for the suspension. A Dynaflow turbo muffler rust-free exhaust
snakes its way past the framing and other mechanicals for the big
exhale.
Drive-Ability
A pleasure to get in and turn the key and now hear some quiet but
throaty exhaust. This is a classy classic that drives like a dream
but is not without faults. During our time behind the wheel we
noted that the clock, heater blower, and radio did not turn on.
Also, the turn signals did not flash and the brake lights did not
illuminate when prompted.
Plenty of WOW factor with this example of restored attention
getting automobile finery. I have not seen many nicer examples come
through these doors and definitely a show winner. Not without a few
faults and flaws, but a very clean original looking car right off
the day 2 floor, and now in our Hallowed Halls.
