Vehicle Description
1965 Chevrolet Chevy II Nova Hardtop
Chevrolet designer Clare MacKichan recalled about creating the
Chevy II: "There was no time for experimentation or doodling around
with new ideas from either the engineers or from us in design; And
it had to be a basic-type car.". "I think that was the quickest
program we ever did at any time," he continued. "We worked night
and day on that car, and it didn't take very long to run it through
our shop because we had a deadline.". And that's what made the
Chevy II one of the fastest new-car development programs in GM
history - just 18 months after the designers got the green light,
the first production Chevy II rolled off the Willow Run, Michigan,
assembly line in August 1961, in time for its September 29th
introduction.
For consignment, a very nice original example of the 1965 Chevrolet
Chevy II Nova. Few faults will be found on this LeMans Blue with
blue interior classic that has been hopped up with a rebuilt and
over-bored V8, a mild performance camshaft, a 3-speed automatic
transmission, ported and polished cylinder heads, and front disc
brakes. Plenty of WOW factor, and very spot on as to what a true
grocery getter from the early 1960's looked like in the
showroom.
Exterior
With only the slightest bit of rust bubbling on the left rear
quarter panel lip, these straight steel panels stand out in our
Hallowed Halls with well minded gaps. All this steel is bathed in a
color change to LeMans Blue paint showing very few frowns on this
exterior. Everywhere you look is elegant simplicity...from the
horizontal front shiny ribbed grille and headlight surround, C H E
V R O L E T badge in front of the hood, and beautiful bumper below
you've arrived with a shout! This 2-door hardtop was the second car
for families on the go to have in suburbia, as mom was getting more
mobile and the kids needed to get to practice or after school
functions, and this was the perfect car to do it but yet with some
sportiness. A low rise reverse scooped hood sits between the front
quarters and on its sides a nice belt line trim spear which adds a
nice accent to the blue. Window trimmings and drip moldings are
shiny and brite as are the curved rear glass trimming, rear deck
insert, and rectangular taillight/backup light bezels. More
Chevrolet badging this time with a bow tie below and another shiny
bumper bringing up the rear. Keeping it all grounded are 14-inch
Chevrolet rally wheels that have nice polished low rise caps and
mirror-like trim rings all wrapped in staggered width blackwall
tires. Just stylish simplicity at its finest.
Interior
Speaking of stylish simplicity, just the door panels fully put in
the game with their plush hobnail broadcloth panels stamped with
just a touch of vertical tuck and roll for accent. This provides
the background for the armrest, the doors handle and window crank,
along with a few more badges and an accenting bar top and bottom in
chrome. As we move inside, up front is the factory dash which is in
pristine condition. We see a full metal jacket steel blue dash top
with a 3 gauge cluster in chrome fronting the driver. A thin band
of ribbed and polished trim runs the length of the bottom of the
dash as it holds a bevy of knobs, pulls and the ignition switch.
The factory AM radio resides in the center of the dash within an
impressed pointed oval in the steel. Just below and bolted to the
bottom of the dash is a brushed aluminum panel with countthem, 6
auxiliary gauges and in front of the passenger is the glovebox door
and modern AM/FM/CD stereo. An original steel steering wheel in
blue is beautifully preserved with a chrome horn ring and center
badge. Deep blue carpeting keeps the two benches afloat, a split
variety in the front and a full bench in the rear. Residing on the
hump is a B&M ratchet shifter within a small black consolette
on the hump. Turning back to the seats, these are made up of more
blue hobnail broadcloth and are as pleasing to the eye as they are
to the posterior. A shout to the very tight and clean, light blue
vinyl headliner and fully functioning light in the center of the
roof.
Drivetrain
A rise of the cowl induction hood and we are met with more visual
excitement with the block and inner fenders bathed in a coating of
black paint. The intake manifold retains its natural aluminum
finish and bolted on top is a new Edelbrock 600cfm 4-barrel
carburetor. Ported and polished cylinder heads are bolted to the
mill and are topped off with new chrome Edelbrock valve covers. A
3-speed automatic transmission is on back which is of the
Turbo-Hydramatic 350 variety and a 10 bolt rear axle turns the
tires. All is very clean and well presented withsupple hoses and
cleanly ran wiring looking great.
Undercarriage
A mixture of black undercoating, some road dirt, and patina with
slight surface rust but it's rare on this undercarriage. All
supporting cast members are present and accounted for like the
front independent coil spring suspension, and rear leaf springs.
Disc brakes are on the front and drum brakes are reserved for the
rear and headers snake down from the engine and connect to dual
exhaust that is Thrush muffler equipped.
Drive-Ability
Just like I was driving out of the showroom with a big smile and
salesman waving, I was driving the perfect Chevy II Nova from 1965.
And drive it did, all with ease, great acceleration, good handling
for this small car if you will, and bias free panic stopping. All
functions were working like a charm with the exception of the
heater blower not blowing.
This is a suburban utilitarian second car workhorse but is in
thoroughbred condition with the V8 under the hood and upgraded
braking. Overall a very fine example of the 1965 iteration of the
Chevrolet Nova with a little kick to help get those cold groceries
home FAST on a hot summer day.
