Vehicle Description
1970 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme SX Hardtop
The SX was a Cutlass Supreme option package called the Y79
Performance Package and was offered only in 1970 and 1971. At the
beginning of the 1970 model year, the SX was simply the newest
version of 1967's Turnpike Cruiser option and the "economy" 442 of
1968 and 1969. The Y79 package was available on both the Cutlass
Supreme Coupe and Convertible, but not on the Cutlass S, the
Cutlass Supreme 4-door, or the station wagon. Additionally, you
could add options from the list of available equipment such as a
console, (the Supreme had buckets standard), sport steering wheel,
Rocket Rally Pac, and the FE2 Rally Sports Suspension. Bulletins
flew out of Lansing during the year changing what was available on
an SX.Sept 5, 1969 - Bulletin introduces the W-32 455 and W27. The
W-32 engine was an option on the SX and was the same engine as in
the automatic transmission 442. This gave the SX its "W-Machine"
status. W27 was the aluminum rear axle carrier and cover available
with W32. Production records show that no W27 rears made it into
Cutlass Supremes, so obviously no SXs had it.
For consignment, ararely seen and very hard toidentify Cutlass
Supreme SX right out of 1970 showing with a title verifed 49,948
actual miles. Thanks to detailedoriginal paperwork and a fully
known ownership history we canprove this to be a true SX, a 442 in
sheep's clothing if you will. This sleek, sporty, and nicely
designed version islooking much the way it did when it rolled off
the Linden, NJ assembly line, but now with a few upgrades that
simply enhance the performance and driveability. Powered by the
numbers matching 455ci V8 and definitely adding some class and
muscle at the same time to our showroom which includes extensive
rooms and halls of the Classic Auto Mall, this Olds is a real
standout among others.
Exterior
Repainted in its original color of Azure Blue, the paint is looking
good with its body contour flowing lines and it'shard to find any
fault in the finish other than a few slight chips at the front of
the passenger's rocker panel. A perfectly aligned split chrome
waterfall grille and dual headlights with a pristine bumper, which
continues to wrap the edges of the headlight bezels and houses the
rectangle signal/running lights is below. Shiny trimmings show up
all over this car and work in conjunction with the lower body trim
spear that runs from stem to stern, (and with the pointed ends this
trimming actually resembles a spear), to accentuate the forward
moving form of this car. This shininessincludes the wheel well
trim, clean badging, window trimmings, and vinyl roof highlighting
all looking great. The steel panels are straight and true and
looking from above gives us a birds eye view of the expansive roof
which is covered by a dark blue vinyl roof with B-pillar C/S
emblems all looking showroom fresh. Bringing up the rear is a
beautiful V formed rear bumper with a series of 2 square inset tail
lights on each side. Newer high performance blackwall Hankook tires
wrap 17-inch Magnum 500 style wheels from Year One. "And now we see
not just another pretty car."
Interior
Opening the large well balanced doors we shake hands with a
wonderful door panel on either side these have light blue vinyl
surrounding an island of wood applique which houses another C/S
badge and just below are blue armrests which have the door
actuator. Offsetting the light blue is a strip of dark blue
carpeting just below. Slipping inside we get behind the 442 spec
steering wheel, (the original wheel is included with your
purchase), which fronts a very clean and original dash. This
presents to us in medium blue and is loaded with plenty of wood
applique for the gauge cluster that holds the Rocket Rally Pack
gauges, including a factory tachometer/clock. Dash central is
holding the silver and chrome heater/AC slides along with the
factory AM/FM radio. Fronting this dash are wonderfully clean blue
vinyl bucket seats with tuck and roll inserts, some smooth
bolsters, and a few buttons on the uppers. We note a seam
separation on the driver's mid- back, but this is all original
material on the seats. The back has an equally beautiful and clean
rear bench, and these all float in a sea of deep pile blue
carpeting. Not to be overlooked is the blue plastic and wood
applique dressed console that runs forward and dies off under the
bottom of the dash. A shout out to the trunk with its stellar plaid
mat, spare wheel and tire, and speckle finished sides. Sit back and
turn on the radioand breathe in the 1970 design you are now
surrounded by! "Nothing to watch but the road.."
Drivetrain
A pop of the hood and you will be in numbers matching 455ci V8
365hp Rocket engine blue painted heaven! There is a 4-barrel
Rochester carb atop and for better drive-ability a rebuilt with a
shift kit 200R4 automatic transmission from a Buick Grand National
is on back. And lest we forget it has a 12-bolt rear that has now
been fitted with a 3.42 gear ratio. "The power of intelligent
engineering."
Undercarriage
Nice and straight with some undercoating and bits of surface rust
on the usual suspects, but the frame and flooring is strong and
sturdy. Power disc brakes are seen on the front and power drums are
mounted to the rear. Providing the quality Oldsmobile ride is an
independent coil sprung front suspension and a 4 link and coil
spring arrangement in the rear. Our consignor states that this is
all Hotchkis suspension including the coil springs and new shocks
havebeenadded all around with all polyurethane bushings added for
improved handling. A dual exhaust system is in charge of the exhale
and is equipped with Flowmaster mufflersthat snakes its way
rearward from the Rocket mill ending in trumpet tips under the dual
cut-out rear bumper.
Drive-Ability
As it looks, it performs and this car was a pleasure to drive and
experience. All buttoned up and a quick warm up and I gently pushed
the accelerator to the floor and took off with rocket like
acceleration. Smooth shifting from the 4-speed automatic, bias free
panic stopping and a comfy cruise without even breaking a sweat,
and the only issue that crept up was a non working reverse lights.
"In man's search for a new measure of excellence..."
An extremely nice example from the year 1970. Cared for and
garaged, a very clean car with a great Azure Blue outside and
2-tone blue inside with most surfaces in very nice condition.
Nearly like a new penny, but better...turn the key and start
enjoying 1970 all over again.
