Vehicle Description
1984 Pontiac Fiero Sport Coupe
The Pontiac Fiero is a mid-engine sports car that was built by
American automobile manufacturer General Motors under the Pontiac
branding from 1983 to 1988 for the 1984 to 1988 model years. The
Fiero was designed by George Milidrag and Hulki Aldikacti as a
sports car. It was the first two-seater Pontiac since the 1926 to
1938 coupes and the first mass-produced mid-engine sports car by an
American manufacturer. Many technologies incorporated in the Fiero
design, such as composite panels, were radical for their time.
For consignment, a time capsule in the form of a 1984 Pontiac
Fiero. This car was purchased by the original owner and used
sparingly until his passing. From there his son sold the car to our
consignor and the rest, as they say, is history. Now it is gracing
our overstuffed Hallowed Halls and now showing a mere 24,928 title
verified original miles and ready to bestow itself in your driveway
ready for you to take it for a spin!
Exterior
This low, 2 door, mid-engine sports car basically uses three kinds
of plastic: reaction-injection-molded, (RIM), polyurethane, a
"soft" plastic designed to take knocks on the front and rear
bumpers; reinforced-reaction-injection-molded, (RRIM),
polyurethane, a harder, but still supple plastic used on the sides
and doors of the Fiero. This car's panels are bathed in white and
is the original paint and body panels as this is a no hit car.
Black accenting is seen with a wrap around the total car trimming
just below the belt line and corresponding top to meet the
mid-section of the front grille. A black rocker trim in plastic,
black glass surrounds, and a black vent for the rear quarter helps
gather up extra air for the mid-engine. 16-inch American Racing
5-spoke wheels are on this example and these are wrapped in like
new BF Goodrich high performance black wall rubber.
Interior
Designated a 2-seater, mid 4-cylinder engine, we swing the doors
and see the 2 buckets covered in dark gray broadcloth for the
inserts and body hugging bolsters. These also show inset speakers
in the headrests and are like new and very clean. A large wide
center console is between the buckets and houses a large storage
compartment, the shift lever, cigar lighter and twin ashtrays.
Taking the square and rectangle design motif to the max, the dash
is made up of a series of squares and rectangles in black with
inserted instruments and other controls. A surrounding light gray
dash front within which are these protruding shapes. Carrying this
idea to the edges where the A/C and heat vents are also on their
own vertical blocks on either side. The door panels are light gray
with black fields for the actuators and window cranks, meanwhile
gray and black peppered carpeted panels reside below. Very clean
like new black peppered gray carpeting floods the floors, and above
is a fuzzy headliner which has a few areas of light sagging.
Drivetrain
The 2.5-liter four cylinder "Iron Duke" engine is inserted in the
mid section directly behind the seats. It is very clean and all
original and is fed via EFI. A Muncie M19 4-speed manual
transmission is within this area as well, and throws power to the
rear wheels via a 4.10 final drive.
Undercarriage
4 wheel independent suspension and 4 wheel power disc braking
attach themselves to a clean rust free unibody which has black rust
free rockers and floor pans. Pretty much a ground effects bottom
with simple attachments and smooth metal abounding. Also noted, no
major runs or drips from the engine's bottom end...AMAZING!
Drive-Ability
I slipped into the firm but comfortable and supple broadcloth
seats, and turned the key for an immediate fire up. On the test
track it handled nicely and ran smoothly. Looking much like an
Italian sports car, it is really a gas saving commuter, so power is
lower as your sacrifice on this 4 cylinder version. All was working
in the functionality department with the exception of the driver's
headlight not popping up all the way.
This 2 owner, amazingly low original mile car has been completely
gone over and is ready to enjoy. A perfect example of what was
traversing the highways and rural roads of America in the mid
1980's and looking just great doing so. Will you be the next lucky
owner?
