Vehicle Description
1937 Buick Sedan
From 1949 to 1958, all Buick cars featured either three or four
round, chrome-trimmed "portholes" in each side of the hood, with
three holes per side denoting a six-cylinder model, and four holes
per side denoting an eight-cylinder. Officially known as
"ventiports", the holes were adopted brand-wide by the company
after Buick designer Ned Nickles, inspired by the exhaust ports on
World War II fighter planes, installed four chrome-trimmed holes in
the hood sides of his 1948 Buick Roadmaster convertible with lights
inside to simulate flickering exhaust flames.
For consignment a 1937 Buick Sedan a pre-ventiport car however this
car has been rodded a bit and now has a 350ci V8 and pre 1949
ventiports, so technically it is correct as it is a V8! The car has
some other interesting features like sponge ope paint for
highlighters, frenched 1959 Caddy tail lights, shaved bumpers, big
bullet cased headlights and a super high V shaped grille and
corresponding long hood. Check out this rad rod ride.
Exterior
Shiny dark teal paint covers the steel surfaces of the sculpted
body work. It presents nicely with a few scratches, dents and
dings. The door lowers are a potential problem area with excessive
bubbling and underlying invasive rust causing it. All other areas
of the body work seem to be secure and rust free. A long hood tops
the V grille up front and 2 bullet cased headlights flank the
grille. In lieu of the original chrome thin trimmings that would be
attached to the sides and run rearward under the hood, we now have
the iconic "ventiports" on either side. Large rounded fenders
protrude from all sides of the bodywork and a common running board
attaches to the bottom. The doors share a common B pillar making
the rear doors suicide doors. A light blue sponged pattern trim
spear is painted on the car's uppers, just below the roofline on
the doors and above the ventiports and runs the length of the body.
An extra window on the C pillar adds more view for the rear
passengers and the roofline is beautifully curved as it makes its
way downward on back past a split rear glass. This car was commonly
referred to as a trunk back with the "humpback" trunk shape that
even has small strap-like hinges on a painted pink and light blue
flourish design above the plate light. On the back of the rear
fenders are dual frenched 59 Cadillac tail lights making a
futuristic effect. The rear bumper has been shaved and now a dark
teal painted bar resides there with dual chromed exhaust peeking
out from below. The car rides on 15-inch Weld wheels all nicely
polished and BFG Radial T/A rubber all around.
Interior
We've stuck with classic design starting with the door panels in
felted broadcloth and sporting some stitching in art deco style.
Gray is the color and this continues for the seats, now late model
buckets with armrests. Seat covers are also on for some extra
protection. A nice broadcloth gray bench is in back and has a teal
throw pillow on it. Front and rear seat belts are noted. In front,
the car retains its original 2 rectangle design with the drivers
rectangle being the speedo and surrounding gauges all in wonderful
art deco styling. The passenger side glovebox rectangle has a
clock-in its center with a sponge painted background. Several add
ons have been put in such as a fuel gauge and toggle to drivers
left, and in the center a is a volt meter, Panasonic AM/FM/CD
player, Vintage AC and venting, and a CB radio. Gray carpeting is
on the floors, slightly soiled and above is a cream headliner
showing some water staining upfront behind the visors.
Drivetrain
Under the hood is a 350ci V8. It is showing slight rusting and
patina on various areas but retains its chrome shine on the valve
coverings and air cleaner covering. A 4-barrel carburetor is on top
and a TH350 3-speed automatic transmission is on back. The rear
axle is a 10 bolt version. The engine bay is painted a nice teal
blue with no rust.
Undercarriage
A Nova front end provides the ride and steering with independent
coil springs and leaf springs are on back. Some patina is noted
throughout the undercarriage. Power disc brakes are upfront, and
power drums are on back with them all being new from July of 2022.
A glasspack style exhaust is on and the floor pans, running boards
and hangers are all in very nice condition.
Drive-Ability
The car firedright up and on the test track it performed like a hot
rod. Good acceleration, bias free braking and easy steering now
power assisted. All functions were working at the time of my test
drive. Breaker 1-9 break!
A bit of a modern touch with the paint and ventiports, a V8 and
TH350 automatic, power steering and AC and a CD player to boot.
Overall a nice job that needs just a little TLC on those door
lowers for some rust remediation and you are good to go and show.
