Vehicle Description
1982 Chevrolet C30 Ramp Truck
Car hauling is a science all of its own. From the early days with
long overhangs, to the multi-car carriers of today and everything
in between, shipping your ride could always be accomplished with
the assistance of a hauler. Ramp trucks made their impact during
the 50's, 60's and 70's as an economical way to haul your race car
to and from the drag strip with ease. It's a simple formula
really...take a heavy duty truck, install a ramp bed on the back,
and paint it up in your favorite color scheme. As a matter of fact,
back in the heyday of drag strip match racing, the ramp truck was
just as recognizable as the race cars themselves.
And now for one of the hottest trends in vintage trucks going
today, for consignment we give you a 1982 Chevy C30 ramp truck.
Finished in a flamedpaint scheme, powered by a BIG BIG big block V8
and having a literal ton of recent maintenance performed all which
help this hauler run like a clock and hauls like a
.....well...hauler! All you need now is the drag car to haul on
it....Stay tuned.
Exterior
Classic Chevrolet trucks from the 80's are quite the hot item these
days. Any classic truck is for that matter, but truth be told, it's
the boxy retro look that people are after, and this truck is the
epitome of that design. A straight horizontal ribbed billet grille
with its outboard inset single headlights and louvered setup on
either side, and even with no bowtie gracing the grille it's easy
to discern this is a Chevy. A slight fade from cream to yellow
dresses the bumper below and the headlights have been upgraded with
HID bulbs. This beautiful setup fronts straight steel with decently
minded gaps, all bathed in menacing black paint with rearward
licking flames thatmorph from cream to yellow to orange. Some blue
pinstriping highlights the flames and simply grabs you and makes
you move closer! Cleancoat peel is noted on the custom louvered
hood that leads back to the visored windshield and we note the
addition of big rig style clearance lights on the visor and roof.
These bulbs, along with the markers, and tail lights are now LED so
there is no excuse for you not to be seen. Good chrome attachments
are on the doors in the form of mirrors, and we note the door
handles have been blackened. All glass surrounds are also black and
mesh well with the dark tinted side and rear windows and we note
that new door seals and window sweeps have recently been installed.
Out back is the meat and potatoes of the operation....a long and
lean ramp bed with custom made ramps and finished in more of the
skillful artwork from Paintin Place in Mohnton, PA. This black
textured and polished diamond plate bed measures 19' of overall
length and 15' 3" from the tail to the wheel chocks which are
adjustable. The width measures in at 7' 3" and we note a wireless
15K Superwinch mounted on the bed floor just under the flamed and
LED lit headache rack. Down low on the bed we see multiple tool
boxes that have freshly been restored in a neon green finish inside
and have new diamond plate flooring. 6...count them 6 wheels and
tires to haul your hot rod are on the corners and are drilled and
polished 16" aluminum for the wheels and nearly new 235/85R16
Cooper rubber wraps all of them.
Interior
The black theme continues with the molded and padded charcoal black
door panels. Slipping inside a new covered in charcoal black vinyl
bench welcomes us and two other passengers if needed. The original
black dash with eye-catching white face gauges is in front of the
rally style steering wheel and we are in custom dash heaven. A
large screen AM/FM touchscreen radio with navigation and a back up
camera hangs to the driver's lower right and we note a few custom
diamond platepanels added to the dash. All the other essentials are
mounted within this dash front, and just below resides a control
panel for all the exterior lighting. Black carpeting for the floors
and above a black painted steel headliner with a rear sliding
window.
Drivetrain
Under the hood is simply put: "eye candy" in the form of a 502ci V8
stroker. This has an Edelbrock intake and a Holley 4-barrel
carburetor bolted on top and has been treated to a new high torque
mini-starter,a new 105 ampalternator, new AC compressor and
brackets, new power steering brackets and a new heavy duty
radiator. A recently serviced TH400 3-speed automatic transmission
is on back along with a heavy duty rear axle to take you down the
road. Also seen are shiny headers,a dixie horn mounted to the
firewall and high energy ignition tolight the fires within. Smoke
'em if you got 'em!
Undercarriage
Far too long for ourlift, we get a worm's eye view of the underside
of this rig. Independent coil spring suspension with power disc
brakes with new pads, rotors and seals are seen up front and in the
rear we see leaf springs and freshly adjusted power drums. New
shocks have been installed all around and we note the presence of a
newmaster cylinder as well as a Holley fuel pump, new sending units
and a new switching valve for the dual fuel tanks. Breathe it in
and we are ready to haul some ass, or at least some awesome vintage
cars.
Drive-Ability
I put on my high riding felted front and mesh back trucker hat for
this drive, and drive I did. While I wasn't able to haul a race car
around the test track, I did for a second consider tapping into our
President's car collection to test out the ramp abilities....then I
realized that the market for a classic car description writer is
small and it was best to just strap my crack decoder on the ramp.
On our track this truck performed with stellar acceleration, bias
free braking, and surprisingly good handling for a truck of this
size. No issues crept up during my drive and I was impressed by the
clarity of all the newly installed lighting.
Really kicking quality, showing some age but still able to haul it
with the best of them. A great business opportunityor simply haul
your racer or show car to the track or cruise in. Either way you'll
be the star of the show, but don't waste any time thinking about
what you'regonna haul because this baby ain't gonna last, as they
say.....whoosh out the door!
