With the introduction of the 500 SLC in 1980, Mercedes-Benz
launched a host of new equipment creating a model that allowed for
eligibility in international rally racing, sanctioned by the FIA.
In order to qualify, 1,000 "Homologation" models had to be built.
Featuring a lightweight aluminum hood and deck lid, and an aluminum
engine air-cleaner housing, the SLC's front and rear spoilers kept
the car stable at its 142-mph top speed. Most importantly,
Mercedes-Benz included its new engine - the 5.0-liter,
aluminum-block V-8 - realizing a weight savings of over 200
pounds.
