Vehicle Description
1966 Oldsmobile Cutlass Convertible
Oldsmobile, the General's humble technology division, definitely
did its fair share to glorify the rise of Detroit. And this sweet
Cutlass is a prime example of their much lauded "bar brawler in a
tuxedo" sales mentality. Yes, it could have been your grandfather's
or Father's Olds, but neither of them would be fooling around in
some stuffy powerless large piece of Detroit iron that is sluggish,
not with this example.
For consignment and featuring a correct drivetrain, a great
Burgundy on white color combination and seemingly mostly original
with a mere 88,519 title verified actual miles on the odometer.
This 1966 Olds is one of the coolest Cutlass A-bodies around our
halls of Classic Auto Mall. And if you're looking for a solid,
road-ready classic that'll turn heads without breaking the bank,
and you'll not have to fuss with much, then this is your cruiser to
go up main street and at a very reasonable price to get in the
game.
Exterior
Featuring a color change respray on the coke bottle styled body, it
has dulled to a beautiful Burgundy Mist patina which shows a few
dents and dings, as well as areas of apparent body work along with
some slight rust bubbling. But overall things are well preserved
for having a respray. A lightly soiled but tear free white canvas
convertible top with a clouded plastic rear window sits above all
this gracefully aged steel as it comes to rest on the rear
quarters. The chrome shows some age, but is not rusted, just dulled
and a little pitting thrown in for character. The bumpers
areembedded into the body for a more streamlined look, have a trim
piece attached on either side which runs from bow to stern,
connecting the bumpers, truly original, with some uneven gaps to
give it personality. Speaking of personality, 14-inch wheels with
standard Oldsmobile covers speak loudly on all 4 corners, and are
wrapped in thin white sidewall radials...Smokinn!
Interior
In contrast and as a highlighter to the burgundy exterior, we see
fairly clean white door panels upon entry. These horizontal pattern
stitching and some chrome highlighting spears in the center. The
Oldsmobile rocket crest is here and below some faded black
carpeting. Actuators and cranks are looking good as well. Inside,
more white vinyl with some tuck and roll and perforated patterning
covers the front buckets and rear full bench. A bare hump with
slightly faded plush black carpeting floats the seats and in front,
an angled dash has black faced duo circular instruments in a half
aluminum and half black textured surfaced dash bottom. Some knobs
and pulls are within the aluminum and some are black including the
temple sliders and AM radio in the center. The factory steering
wheel fronts this dash and is in excellent condition and a shout
out to the trunk with its full size spare and factory jack.
Drivetrain
Appearing unrestored we are greeted with the factory black block
and valve covers upon opening the hood. A decal emblazoned air
cleaner sporting Oldsmobile Cutlass verbiage covers this 330ci V8
which is believed to be the original power plant. It is topped with
a rebuilt 4-barrel carburetor and can produce 320hp. A 2-speed
Jetaway, (don't you just love these midcentury jet age
names?!),automatic graces the rear of the engine. A 3.07 axle turns
the rear tires and we note a new fuel pump with new hoses.
Undercarriage
Surface rust and a bit of invasive rust in areas can be noted
especially in a few of the body supports. The floor pans are good,
as is the frame which shows some surface rust, and rockers have
rust as well. All original underneath with the factory
rustproofing, and power drum brakes all around. Independent coil
spring suspension is on for the front ride and a 4 link and coil
springs provide the ride for the rear.
Drive-Ability
This 66 fired right up and off to the test track I went. I tried
the panic stopping first and it pulled to the right just slightly.
The car accelerated smoothly as it did shift wise. Handling was
good and the power steering helped the car driveeffortlessly. The
radio did not operate and the top did not go down electrically,
however our consignor states that it can be manually lowered.
Wonderful dulled patina, some preserved interior, a bit of rust
where one would expect it underneath, and a very nice power plant,
this time capsule can take you back in time to an era where we were
shooting for the moon, in social upheaval, and going through our
growing pains as a country. GM found its stride in this preserved
example of your Father's Oldsmobile, now follow in his footsteps
with the top down!
