Vehicle Description
1959 Mercedes-Benz Unimog 411
The Unimog is an all terrain vehicle produced by Daimler AG and
sold under the Mercedes-Benz Brand. Production of the Unimog
started in 1948 by Boehringer until Damiler acquired the brand and
put the Unimog into its model range in 1950. Highly adaptable, the
Unimog can be found around the world in many uses, from agriculture
to emergency services. UNIMOGs career as a military vehicle
actually started in 1955 when Western Germany again became a
sovereign country and a member of NATO. It was at this time that
the new German Army, the Bundeswehr, was created.
For consignment, a 1959 Unimog 411 which came to our consignor in
2012 with its original build sheet, and at that point underwent a
drivetrain restoration but was in poor condition body-wise. The
consignor completed the bodywork, and added a ton of new parts such
as new wiring harness, head and tail lights, signal lights, hoses
brakes, gauges canvas roof, door windows and the fuel tank was
resealed. Now it's looking and running great and I guarantee you
will be the only one on the block with this go anywhere short
wheelbase, high clearance military vehicle. Sieg Heil!! (Hail
Victory!!)
Exterior
Chris Radbill of Westchester has executed a great performance on
the truck's exterior and now it is all straight as a German
marksman with well minded gaps and all bathed in Sap Green. A
squared off design with a steeply raked hood and a vertical thin
grille featuring a central chromed tri-pointed star and single
headlights on either side. A PTO shaft peeks out in front of the
driver's side of the gridded green grille. A simple curved black
bar bumper is below and that short hood moves rearward to the doors
which are just above the curved steel plate front wheel fender
well. A vertical split front windshield has an olive drab canvas
top which can be left up or moved in the down position for open air
combat. A short wood sided bed, (sides are green outside and
natural stained oak inside), as is the bed which is beautifully
restored. The sides can also be removed and serve as a flatbed.
Massive red painted and black center rubbed 18-inch wheels are
wrapped in 10.5-18 MPT deep tread tires that could double as a
tractor to plow the back forty. Some simple metal plate fenders
under the bed are keeping mud off the underside and from flipping
back to the vehicle behind you. A large fuel tank spans the width
under the front of the bed and is painted black. A real looker with
those massive tall tires and wheels and the short wheelbase. Lass
uns gehen!
Interior
A swing of the tall order utilitarian steel perfectly restored
doors leads us inside. Here I can perch and look upon the rest of
the world from simple padded black vinyl covered low back buckets
also in perfect condition. These chairs are surrounded by thick Sap
Green painted steel, all boxing in the engine and housing a bevy of
new circular black faced white lettered instruments, a few pulls
and warning lights, and a turn switch. In the center between the
seats are dual shift levers and on the dash is a "kuhlwasser", (in
yellow German script), tank assumedly to keep the windscreen clean
and a shift pattern. Floors are straight green painted steel and it
does not get any simpler. Kugelsicher
Drivetrain
Crammed under that steeply raked hood, mostly mounted into the
cabin and covered over is a totally rebuilt 1.7l I4 cylinder diesel
engine. It has fuel injection and a 6-speed manual transmission
with a 2-speed reverse. The transmission offers a crawler gear and
normal speed traveling. All is well with new wiring, hoses and
other add ons under here. Our consignor states that the original
block is coming with the truck. Schnell? Nein!
Undercarriage
Just perfectly restored like the topside, and all black textured
undercoating for the steel and axles as well as suspension.
Speaking of which is 4 steel on all corners coil springs, and
braking is 4 wheel drums. No rust, no drips, no errors.
Eindrucksvoll.
Drive-Ability
A little tricky to start but ultimately you are in the rough and
tumble version of a Mercedes Benz, which has been very well done.
This little rig drives beautifully and you can feel that diesel
power ready to take you through nearly anything. All functions are
working just fab and it rides like a massive 4x4. Verdammt, die
Torpedos.
Just an unusual well buttoned up 4x4 that no one else will have
within many miles. This beauty leaves no stone unturned on the
resto, and is just a visual cutie but massively capable of getting
very dirty.
