Vehicle Description
2001 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am WS6 Coupe
In 1978, hot on the heels of Smokey and the Bandit's big box
office, Trans Am sales exploded and Pontiac introduced the WS6
Special Performance Package. The $324 option added one-inch-wider
158-inch Snowflake wheels, larger tires, and a thicker rear sway
bar. In 1979 Trans Am sales peaked with around 117,000 sold, and
the WS6 Package-now also offered on the Formula-got four-wheel disc
brakes, which drove its price up to $434. The handling package
remained an option throughout the Firebird's second generation and
continued in various forms throughout the third generation,
becoming standard on the 1987 Formula and the new top Trans Am GTA
model. However, when the fourth generation of the Firebird was
introduced in 1992, the WS6 option was gone. Four years later, as
Pontiac was fighting off Ford's new more powerful SVT Mustang, the
option code re-appeared and featured a ram air hood with two
nostrils. The option would remain on the books until the last
Firebird rolled off the assembly line in 2002. These fourth-gen WS6
cars were the quickest and fastest Firebirds ever produced and they
represent the final gasp of Pontiac's screaming chicken. Now more
than 20 years old, collectors have begun to understand their
significance and values are on the rise. -Thx to Hagerty.com
For consignment, originally from our friends up north in the St.
Therese, Canada assembly plant, this sculpted, aerodynamic T-topped
muscle car in the form of a 1 owner WS6 equipped 2001 Trans AM
retaining its original window sticker. With its extremely low
original miles, this WS6 version has a mere 25,656 title verified
miles on the clock. A very original car, which has been garage kept
most of it's life, has been faithfully maintained and all in
showroom condition awaits a new caretaker as it holds its own as
part of the vast inventory in our Hallowed Halls.
Exterior
All dressed up in sinister black, from the 2 bumps at the front of
the fenders that magically turn into headlights. From there we
breathe in the pointed neoprene nose, the Ram Air intake scooped
hood flanked by 2 front fender bumps, and more intake inlets on the
quarter panels, to the severely raked windscreen, to the rear trunk
lid that seems to go on forever as it becomes an integrated
spoiler. Just below the spoiler are honeycomb style tail lights,
(the designers at Pontiac loved this design), and a rounded
neoprene crash bumper further down with polished exhaust tips
peeking out the edges. All in nice condition, and an available
T-top setup comes with this car. Highly polished chrome factory
17-inch WS6 wheels are seen on all 4's and come to us wrapped in
deeply treaded but older, (2010 and 2012 tire date), 275/40ZR17
rubber.
Interior
Ebony leather covers the two front power buckets, the rear 2 plus 2
bench, and steering wheel, as well as the Hurst gear shift. The
leather is soft and supple and shows only minor bolster wear on the
driver's side. There are 6-way power seats on the driver's side and
4-way on the passenger. A swooping center console is flanked by the
buckets and makes its way to the dash while including a glove
box/armrest, cup holder, gearshift, climate controls, and the
factory Monsoon AM/FM/CD player with a built in EQ fills the
factory spot in the dash. The normal cluster instruments are clean
and bright and nice matching ebony carpet floods the floor.
Drivetrain
A correct and clean 5.7 liter LS1 V8 is found within the engine bay
and is electronically fuel injected to assist with the 305hp count
this mill makes. A Tremec T56 6-speed manual transmission is bolted
to the back, and these in combination make use of the 10-bolt 3.42
rear axle ratio and posi-traction to turn the tires to spin and
make the black marks on the pavement!
Undercarriage
The undercarriage is very clean with only light road dirt and
scratched paint. A light surface rust covers the usual suspects,
(suspension, rear axle, etc), and the gray flooring and unibody
shows with slight factory black overspray. Power front and rear
disc brakes are on all the corners, and this car comes equipped
with electronic traction control. Independent coil springs on the
front and a torque arm with coil springs on the rear provide the
ride. The OEM single exhaust is still in place and ends with dual
tail pipes under the rear bumper.
Drive-Ability
This car started right up, and even with the miles, smells new!
Smooth shifting, nice power and great ride as well as interior
comfort. One gets the feeling of driving a piece of sculpture with
all the inlets and curved cowlings etc. Overall a great driver like
new but we did note that the driver's up and down power mirror
function is non operational.
A good mileage, 1 owner, well cared for example of the modern style
Trans Am. Aerodynamically designed and performance enhanced to be
reliably driven, hassle free. Press the button, open up the top
panels and make some marks on the pavement!
