Vehicle Description
1964 Ford Fairlane 500 Club Sedan
The Ford Fairlane Thunderbolt was a limited-production drag-racing
version of the ordinary Ford Fairlane made for just the 1964 model
year. Only 100 units were made, 49 of these were four-speed manuals
while 51 were automatics - and its performance was enough for Ford
to win the NHRA Super Stock Championship for the same year. The
Ford Fairlane was a light car and fitted with the 7.0-liter V8 with
dual four-barrel carburetors that usually went into the Galaxie -
it became a powder keg. This worked because while the Galaxie
engine was perfect, but the car was too heavy to be successfully
raced. The intermediate Ford Fairlane had no such compunctions and
raced to the end as a winner.
For consignment, a Fairlane Club Sedan now looking an awful lot
like the Ford Fairlane Thunderbolt, and with only a mere 100 of
these produced, a very hard to find original version. Our version
has been painstakingly restored, fitted with a hot shot mill with
lots of goodies bolted on, and plenty of cosmetic work then bathed
in correct Vintage Burgundy paint. Let's act like it's Washington's
birthday and put the hammer down on this cherry machine, and delve
deeply into this beautiful build of a 1964 Ford Fairlane 500
sedan.
Exterior
Many square feet of beautifully massaged steel and fiberglass
panels, which are straight as arrows and have well minded gaps,
adorn the exterior. These have been finished in Vintage Burgundy
paint, base coat and clear coat and are anything but the pits when
it comes to fit and finish. Gleaming chrome and stainless-steel
trimmings in the form of trim spears, egg crate grille, dual
headlights, silver finished fiberglass bumpers and fab window
trimmings, and even a C-pillar accenting panel give us the 64 shape
of the Fairlane. There is a Crites fiberglass teardrop hood looking
lots like the Thunderbolt of 64 yore and to add to the allure are
period correct decals gracing the sides including the 427 eagles on
the doors and Thunderbolt on the rear quarter panels. A slightly
widening trim spear runs down the mid belt-line of the squared off
sides and culminateson the rear quarters with a snappy vertical
faux vent scoop. On back, more jet age styling with the
thruster-esque tail lights, a nice aluminum trim panel with some
badging, another pristine fiberglass bumper and a Tasca badge on
the trunk lid. This machine presents with a beautiful stance, which
is highlighted by 15-inch American Racing 5 spoke Torque Thrust
wheels on all 4 corners wrapped in like new staggered width
blackwall radials.
Interior
Opening the doors reveals some smooth Palomino vinyl mixing with
lots of trim, some faux stitched panels, pulls and cranks, and some
polished aluminum highlighting. Dual front low back buckets which
present with tuck and roll inserts and smooth bolsters show in more
Palomino vinyl. A rear bench shows as an original seat, and is the
same pattern as the redone buckets. Upfront, an original gauge
cluster with a deep set trio of round gauges nicely aged to a
mellow cream sits within a curved aluminum center panel and a
Palomino steel painted upper and lower with a Ford tachometer
mounted atop. A 3 spoke wood rimmed steering wheel, well preserved,
fronts this dash and sits atop an adjustable steering column. Dash
central is holding the radio and heater delete panels and just
below are a trio of black face supporting gauges. Below is a
B&M long armed shifter floating within a deep sea of lightly
soiled black rubber flooring. Above is an off white and very tight
vinyl headliner.
Drivetrain
A flip of the hood and within a completely restored engine bay is a
fully tricked out mill which is a consignor stated427ci center
oiler V8 that retains its stock bore but does have 2 sleeved
cylinders. This monster has been fitted with Eagle rods, KB
hypereutecticpistons and a 427 camshaft. Capping things off are a
pair of Edelbrock aluminum medium riser cylinder heads along with a
pair of Holley 4-barrel carburetors to feed this mill copious
amounts of air and fuel. Assisting in that is the Thunderbolt style
ram air induction that accepts fresh air via ducts run to the inner
headlights. On back is a C3 3-speed automatic transmission which
throws power to the 33 spline axle equipped Ford 9-inch 3.25 geared
rear axle with a Wave-Trac posi unit.
Undercarriage
Plenty of attention to this structure of the undercarriage was
paid, and is now paying off with headers and Flowmaster mufflers
with the tips ending just in front of the rear axle. A Mustang II
style front suspension is on and in the back we see leaf springs
with heavy duty traction bars that tie to the added driveshaft
loop/rear chassis brace. Disc brakes all reworked are on all 4
corners.
Drive-Ability
The fruits of this restorer's labors all come together for an
amazing thrill ride with great acceleration, bias free braking, and
good handling. All in working perfectly condition save for the
speedometer and wipers not functioning.
A very special build with lots of attention to detail and looking
much like the Thunderbolt, and with a very powerful twist for the
power plant. Beautiful paint, and any excellent tribute example
from Henry's estate named Fairlane right out of 1964!
