After buying Rover and its associated brands in 1994 BMW set out to modernize the iconic Mini, introducing the Cooper 3-door hatchback in 2001 that included three variants: the base Cooper, the sporty Cooper S and the range topping John Cooper Works. The result was a thoroughly hip interpretation of the "Hot Hatch" segment with a style that while true to the Classic British Mini benefited mightily from the best that German engineering had to offer.
Gen One Minis received a facelift and mechanical improvements in 2005. All Gen One Cooper S models were performance enhanced with a supercharger and when combined with the 6-speed manual transmission are proper sports cars and became instant classics.
