As one would expect of a strike that lasted for so long, the
Firebird's entire 1972-model production run was significantly
impacted. From the 1971 model-year production of 53,125 Firebirds,
total production dropped to just 29,951 cars, so it's no wonder
that so few 1972 Firebirds, Formulas, and Trans Ams can be found
today.
One of the rarest and today one of the most sought-after Trans Ams
is the 1972 model, of which only 1,286 were built. It was the last
year of the 455 H.O. engine, which was standard equipment in the
T/A, buyers having only to select between the TH400 automatic or
the M-22 four-speed manual.
It took time for the Trans Am legend to build: It's easy to forget
that the bespoilered 'Bird was a niche player in the muscle wars
when they were raging. Consider: More than 100,000 Trans Ams were
built in 1979; compare this to a total of 29,951 Firebirds of all
varieties in the (admittedly strike-shortened) 1972 model year. Of
that number, just 1,286 were Trans Ams. Automatics outnumbered
four-speeds roughly two to one (just 458 had four-speeds), but
beyond the low production, the '72 Trans Am was very much its own
beast
