Vehicle Description
1947 Plymouth Coupe
There are various theories about the origin of the term "hot rod".
The common theme is that "hot" related to "hotting up" a car, which
means modifying it for greater performance. One theory is that
"rod" means roadster, a lightweight 2-door car which was often used
as the basis for early hot rods. Another theory is that "rod"
refers to the camshaft, a part of the engine which was often
upgraded in order to increase power output. In the early days, a
car modified for increased performance was called a "gow job". This
term morphed into the hot rod in the early to middle 1950s.
This 1947 Plymouth coupe offered for consignment is an older
restification which still looks and drives great in every way. The
dark red paint still shines like new witha few flaws from being
driven and enjoyed and comes with a list of the sourced parts used
to bring this rodder together into near perfect post war form. An
updated chassis, drivetrain, suspension, along with the flared
rockers, rounded fenders and hood, and subtle rounded chrome
trimmings, she's a natural to be spiced up and she was...
Exterior
Bathed in a Cinnamon Red Metallic respray, the Briggs bodied steel
is fairly straight, and the gaps are good. Some cracking and
crazing of the body filler are evident, as are some areas of chip
off and slight rust underneath, but this is reserved for the lower
panels. What little chrome that has been retained is still nicely
polished, and not much fault can be found with it. Noted the front
bumper has been shaved and it adds to the great looks of the front,
but there is plenty of chrome trim interacting to form the
curvaceous grille, front of the fenders with single headlights, as
well as the mirrors and wiper arms which hug the split pane tinted
windshield. The passenger cabin design, with its 5 windows, has a
forward canter, and a gracefully rounded rear trunk and C pillar,
which makes its way downward to the kustom flush mount AMC door
handles, 1941 Chevrolet tail lights, and frenched into the trunk
license plate area. A black painted curved rear bumper resides
below and the same degree of tinted glass from the windshield
repeats itself throughout the cabin. Some 14 and 15-inch Cragar
wheels, bathed in chrome, are wrapped in staggered width blackwall
tires all around.
Interior
Back in the 40's when motoring was still young, Plymouth made it a
point to shuttle their customers in style. That mindset continues
with this build inside as we are greeted with puffy tuck and roll
dark red door panels fitted with power windows by Balls Streetrod
Stuff, a modern dark red vinyl armrest and black actuators. Lightly
bunched deep red velour broadcloth covers the split bench front
seat and is courtesy of a 1985 Buick and a custom rear bench in the
same pattern is playing matchy matchy with its custom "bucket" seat
backs courtesy of Woodbury upholstery shop. These seats are fronted
by a custom dash retaining its full metal jacket, painted silver as
a nice contrast, and sport a black and brushed aluminum metal plate
for the instrument cluster. Within this plate are white and black
face gauges that are encased within chrome bezels. In the center, a
modern AM/FM/CD stereo has been inserted along with a pop out
ashtray, some chrome knobs and the heater slides. In front of the
passenger is all silver steel with a custom Kustom badge. Lightly
wrinkled gray broadcloth is on for the headliner and visors, and in
the center of the floor is a long arm black booted shifter. This
sits in very clean deep pile red carpeted flooring. Our consignor
notes that a TRW wiper motor has been installed along with a 1983
custom fit Nissan Pulsar heater box, and a Dr. K's printed circuit
wiring panel.
Drivetrain
A consignor state Targetmaster 350ci V8 with its industrial patina
look resides in the muted matte black bay. The engine has an
overall gently used and industrial/machine age quality, that I
really think looks fab with the polished and ribbed valve
covers, air cleaner lid and Weiand intake manifold! This mill is fed
by a like new QuickFuel Brawler 4-barrel carburetor, and a rebuilt
TH350 3-speed automatic with a Summit Racing 2000rpm stall
converter is on back. A custom driveshaft by Allied Trucking in
Delaware takes the handoff and sends power rearward to the rebuilt
and all new Buick 10 bolt rear axle. Keeping things cool is a 1974
Dodge Dart radiator with custom hoses.
Undercarriage
An all buttoned up and structurally sound for the 1974/75 El Camino
frame with its solid floor pans and rockers making up the bottom of
this rod. With independent coil springs upfront and a 4 link with
coil springs for the rear and now 1974 Buick Apollo power disc
brakes in front and Buick power rear drums we are in good handing
and stopping territory. A stainless steel muffler dual exhaust
system is bolted on and snakes its way from front to rear.
Drive-Ability
The comfortable interior provided lots of conveniences that worked
perfectly when we fired up this Plymouth. Off to the test track,
(yup it's one of the hazards of the job, but I must confide that
with my decoder and muscle car expert and partner in crime yapping
as we go along things can get a bit tiresome with the information
overload), where this car performed just wonderfully, all working
conveniences, and a smooth ride and good cruiser.
