For Sale: 1939 Packard Twelve in Newberg, Oregon

Vehicle Description

1939 Packard Twelve Club Sedan.

Located near PORTLAND, OREGON.

1939 was the final year of production for the legendary Packard Twelve. Just 566 were produced in all body styles, approximately 40 of which were Club Sedans on the 134" wheelbase. This car was sold new in Seattle on February 14, 1939 and appears to have spent its early life in California (based on the station call letters on the push-button radio, and the Earle C. Anthony service placard inside.) About 25 years ago it made its way to the Portland area, where it has been ever since.

This Packard is a fine example of a largely original, impeccably maintained car that has been used sparingly through the years. Current mileage showing of 36,800 miles is believed to be correct from new. Before coming to Oregon it received a repaint in Packard "Indian Maroon" color. It presents beautifully with only minor signs of age. The chrome is all bright, with no pitting. Cloissenae emblems on the hood, trunk and hubcaps are all excellent. Rubber running board mats are excellent (possibly replaced in the past.) Excellent top insert. Doors close easily and securely. Being a west coast car, it has NO RUST. See undercarriage photos. Exceptionally clean throughout.

The interior is completely original from 1939 and in remarkable condition, confirming the low mileage.  The seats are firm, upholstery is supple (not dry rotted or hard) with no rips or tears. Headliner is excellent, as are the carpets - including the original deep-pile "mouton" (Persian lambswool) carpeting and foot rests in the rear compartment. Genuine wood trim and garnish moldings and nickeled silver door handles are beautiful. The original woodgrained dashboard in also exceptional.

Highly optioned with working Packard heater, defroster and radio. Dual sidemounted spare tires with mirrors, outside fender-mounted courtesy lights, fog lights and trunk rack. Cormorant hood mascot. Turn signals added.
Obviously, this car has been pampered by careful owners its entire life.

Mechanically excellent. The 472 cubic inch V-12 engine starts easily, runs smoothly and quietly, with the tremendous power and torque that these cars were known for. No smoke, no unusual noises or issues. Nicely detailed under the hood. Unmodified. All components work as original. Fitted with high-speed gears in the differential, the current owner has driven this 5,600 pound car at speeds of 85 miles per hour (uphill!) with ease. Vacuum-assisted brakes and clutch work properly. 3-speed manual transmission shifts perfectly. Original 6 volt electrical system with added switched 12 volt battery in the trunk for easy hot starting. Battery shut-off switch under the hood. Clean radiator. Does not overheat. Working thermostatic grille shutters. Auxiliary 6v. electric fuel pump. All gauges work and register accurately. Excellent oil pressure. Vacuum windshield wipers work well. 8.25x16 wide whitewall bias ply tires hold the road well. Truly a pleasure to drive. Others who have driven it have proclaimed it to be the best driving Twelve they have experienced.
