Vehicle Description
1980 Chevrolet C30 Scottsdale Utility Body Pickup
Light-duty service trucks, also known as utility trucks, are a
mostly post World War 2 American phenomenon. Trucks are, and have
always been endlessly configurable, as to capacities and
applications. Unlike cars, which are complete and fully fitted out,
trucks are often ordered new as a cab-and-chassis, in which the
final configuration of the vehicle is determined by the aftermarket
elements and features that are added to it. Work trucks, in
general, begin as either enclosed panel vans, pickup trucks, or
flatbed trucks. The high-capacity, open rear platforms of
heavy-duty flatbed trucks offer all sorts of opportunities for
modification and specialization. Vans offer the capacity to be
fitted and configured internally, while offering security, weather
protection, and either anonymity or a broad open expanse for logos
and/or advertising.
This consignment, a 1980 C30 Scottsdale utility body 2 wheel drive
pickup that isas well known in the Berks county area as the fabled
Action News van, or so states our consignor. With its original
paint, company lettering, and enclosed Reading utility body
thisworker bee is begging to be the gold star of your business. A 1
owner truck, that with some TLC will be ready, willing and able to
perform any task you can throw at it, or better yet take our
consignor's advice and create yourself the ultimate Philadelphia
Eagles tailgating party machine. The world is your oyster!
Exterior
Call it Shamrock Green, Emerald Green or Eagles Green, whatever
your name choice, it coats every corner of this utility body truck,
and it appears for the most part to be the original finish. Fading,
noted as heavier on the utility box, chips, scratches and poorly
performed body work show throughout the body along with areas of
invasive rust on the rockers, cab corners and insides of the door
jambs. The original and still shiny chrome front bumper and bowtie
dressed eggcrate grille with outboard single round headlights lead
the way and the centrally peaked hood runs rearward to the black
trimmed nice condition windshield. The hand painted lettering,
which is original, is still showing proudly on the passengers door
and makes an appearance again on the driver's side of the bed box.
Speaking of the utility box, it's a Reading Body unit which is
known for high quality builds that remain durable and can withstand
the rigors of daily use. A multitude of storage compartments are
seen on the box sides and when opened reveal shelving units as well
as compartments to store your tools, hardware or damn near anything
else your heart desires and ladder holders are noted on the
passenger side of the box. Moving around back we shake hands with a
quad of windowson the dual doors that swing open to allow us access
to the walk in box. Inside we are met with a 1/8" aluminum diamond
plate floor and 3 rows of storage shelves per side. 16.5-inch
standard steel wheels are on the 4's and are wrapped in tires that
are old enough to deem replacing in the near future, although the
tread remains in good condition. Standard bowtie badged dog dish
caps are on for a little extra pizazz.
Interior
The originality continues on the inside with faded green plastic
door panels thatpresent with ribbed horizontal inserts and chrome
delineationmarkers. Shamrock Green steel surrounds the panels and
some chrome for the cranks and actuators provides a nice dress up.
Slipping inside, the factory dark green vinyl bench with its grain
finish stretches door to door and shows with some hastily repaired
tears withclear tape. The original dash with its faded green padded
topper holds a bevy of factory black faced gauges all within a
textured black panel and the factory black insert with knobs and
heater/AC slides below along with the factory AM radio. The factory
steering column is holding the black rimmed original steering wheel
atop. Soiled, torn and faded light green rubber matting covers the
floors and above is a utilitarian green steel headliner.
Drivetrain
Sitting within the cavernous unrestored engine bay is a 350ci V8
with the heavy duty emissionssystem. A TH350 that is a 3-speed
automatic follows closely behind. A 14 bolt heavy duty rear axle
rounds out the package nicely. Patina, surface rust and corrosion
abound throughout the engine bay adding to the overall
originality.
Undercarriage
Keeping with the unrestored theme we are met with a patined but
overall solid undercarriage. Road dirt and some rust dance
throughout the bottom side all the while having solid steel making
an appearance for the frame and flooring. We note a few repairs on
the body hangers but overall things remain structurally sound.
Power disc brakes are noted in the front along with an independent
coil spring suspension and in the rear are power drums along with
leaf springs to provide the ride.
Drive-Ability
A twist of the key and this truck came to life with minimal
cranking and settled into a smooth idle. Our test drive was cut
short due to the rear brakes being hung up, however they did
release, but we did not want to risk them locking again during our
drive. We noted the AC was blowing warm during our short time in
the truck but all else was functioning as it should.
An honest and original C30 utility body version of the Scottsdale
pickup right out of 1980. Some consignor stated local fame due to
how long the truck has been around and with some TLC on the brakes
and body you can have a great promotional piece for your existing
business. Better yet, why not start a new business and turn this
truck into a money maker. Me personally, I like the ultimate
tailgate rig idea...E A G L E S, EAGLES!!!!
