Model History:
Originally a trim level for the 1950 Chieftan, the Catalina became its own model in 1959. The "junior-series" full-size model of the lineup, the Catalina offered more standard amenities and power over their Chevrolet bretheren. For 1961, the model was completely restyled, featuring a dramatic grille harkening back to Pontiacs of the '30s and '40s. The 1961 updates also slightly reduced the vehicle's size, reducing its weight and allowing the standard 389ci (6.4L) V8 to propel the car quite sufficiently. A number of optional extras, including a three-speed "Roto Hydramatic" automatic transmission and power upgrades, allowed buyers to spec their Catalinas to their needs.
