Vehicle Description
1982 Avanti Avanti II Coupe
While the Studebaker company officially became defunct in 1966, a
group of Studebaker enthusiasts partnered together to purchase the
tooling and manufacturing equipment required to make the Avanti.
Production continued under various company owners all of the way
through the early 2000s. For 1982, the Avanti was built upon a
Chevrolet Monte Carlo chassis and featured a fiberglass body. These
are truly unique cars that make for an awesome weekend cruiser.
This 1982 Avanti II comes to us from a consignor that appreciates
art, modern design, classic lines and the finer things in life. An
appreciation of the different things in life, and a successful
business owner what a perfect fit! Like driving a piece of
sculpture everyday.
Exterior
In true spirit of the 60's Avanti, this black fiberglass over Khaki
with burl interior accents, presents in good condition. The fit and
finish are straight and a few scratches in the exterior show some
encounters with the real world. Overall the paint is fair and has
some faults as well. Due to fiberglass there is no rust save for
the inside of the chromed spoked 15-inch wire wheels. Black resin
molded bumpers matching the raked at an angle front and rear
lighting panels give the car a retro yet futuristic look. A flat
edged front bumper in chrome adds to the look. The roofline is just
sexy to say the least, mainly by making use of the rear curved and
bubble glass and a short trunk deck. Short wrap-around tail lights,
a rear luggage rack and another chromed bumper complete the dual
exhaust outlet back of the car. A clean body style, very much like
a contemporary minimalist avant garde work of art.
Interior
Khaki leather wraps the high backed front bucket and rear bench
seats, as well as the padded swooping contemporary styled dash. The
seats have some tuck and roll for extra support and sport smooth
bolsters. The door panels do not suffer from a lack of leather,
with khaki tuck and roll within a frame of smooth uppers and brown
carpeted lowers. A wide armrest is in the center opening of the
tuck and roll. as well. Carpathian exotic polished burl peppers the
wrap-around dash center and covers the center shifter console where
vertical AC vents and some ball topped sliders are seen. A padded
leather armrest doubles as a handbrake covering and sits directly
behind the Seattle space needle styled shift lever. Thick pile
brown carpeting makes the leather stand out even further and is
plush enough to go barefoot. Above is a smooth headliner in leather
and a leather wrapped roll bar is seen for extra structural
stability. The steering wheel is a MOMO rally wheel and has a
mahogany wood edge within cast billet styled aluminum spokes.
Drivetrain
Under the forward flipping hood is a 305ci V8 producing 150hp and
is attached to a 200R4 4-speed automatic transmission. This mill is
fed by a 2-barrel carburetor. A 2.72 rear axle is spinning the rear
wheels. All fairly clean in the engine bay.
Undercarriage
Some light surface rust peppers the undercarriage on the suspension
and frame and the floorpan tubs are fiberglass and show in black.
Dual glasspack style exhaust are on and front suspension is
independent coil springs. The back is leaf springs and power disc
brakes are in front and power drums on back
Drive-Ability
The car fired right up and off to the test track where it had good
performance. Not neck snapping, but still enough to get the
adrenaline going providing a nice smooth ride with good handling.
Brakingwas bias free and there were a few areas of concern with the
horn not working, the radio silent, the tachometer not operating
and the AC not blowing cold.
This resurrected fiberglass version of the Avanti is art in motion
as well as elegance personified. This automobile includes a
pantheon of extra features and is pure rolling style. Acar that was
designed for the potential buyer who believes car building is an
art and the driver is showing it to the audience. It's a win
win!
