Vehicle Description
2004 Ford Mustang Mach 1
Sporty, eye-catching, and powerful! This is how people often
described, (and still do), the different generations of the Ford
Mustang Mach 1 throughout the years and the fourth generation of
the Mach 1 is not an exception. Produced in 2003 and 2004, the
fourth generation of Mach 1 Mustangs became one of the most iconic
performance editions of Mustangs Ford has ever made. While muscle
car fans often know about the first 69-70 generation and the latest
2021 generation of Mach 1, the in-between models and generations
often get overlooked. Even though the 2003-2004 models were just as
legendary, cool-looking, and powerful as their ancestor and
successor. Unlike the previous un-special special edition badges,
Mach 1 was here to impress and it was not fooling around. Unlike
the previous Mach 1 editions that came with different engine specs,
the 2004 Mach 1 only offered one line of engines; 32-valve, DOHC
4.6-liter V8s. it was the same beloved and powerful engine that
powered the SVT Cobra but modified with a supercharger. Offering
305hp and 320 pound-feet torque, the 2004 Ford Mustang Mach 1
experience was, and still is, something to behold! The standard
version offered a five-speed manual transmission. A four-speed
automatic was also available but, let's be honest, you wouldn't
want a Mach 1 with automatic gears, would you?
For consignment, a 2004 Mustang Mach 1 who's name falls right into
the theme of this build....speed and lots of it! With firepower
coming from a supercharged 4.6 liter, 32-valve DOHC V8, it was
based on Ford's family of modular V8s. The engine in this Mach 1 is
considerably more advanced thanks to a full rebuild, upgraded cams
and of course a Procharger supercharger. This engine now produces a
a dyno proven 489 horsepower and is designed to do one thing and do
it well...Go Fast!!! Wearing its original Torch Red paint, making
it 1 of 1,259 built for the model year, and a comfy retro leather
interior you have the mix of fine tuned euro sports car mixed with
good old American horsepower. Sporting a title verified 59,041
miles, this famousthrowback is ready to break the sound barrier and
leave whatever challengers come your way feeling your sonic
boom.
Exterior
Starting out life from the factory in Torch Red and still wearing
that application today, the finish remains in the deep end of the
pool and is looking great to this day. This finish is not without a
few faults and flaws in the form of the touched up chip offs and a
few small scuffs on the chin spoiler. The red is aplenty for this
car and save for the badging, there is not one lick of chrome
anywhere. A big front chin spoiler goes mean and low to the ground
and along with the neoprene front bumper frames the otherwise
Mustang front grille with the long lived running pony floating in
its center. Rocker flared fairings hover below the throwback hockey
stick coves above in the doors and rear quarter, and on back a low
profile spoiler keeps things grounded. Window trimmings are all in
black and giving a bit more retro to the looks are black tape
stripes running rearward up the hood, pausing for the uber kewl
Shaker scoop, then starting again before dying off at the base of
the sharply raked windshield. This stripe appears again on the
short trunk lid and works perfectly with the Mach 1 call out black
rocker stripes. Filling out the rear of the car are the modern take
on the 3 piece tail lights and a honeycomb in black covering the
base of the trunk lid. Just belowis a nice aero designed body
matching neoprene crash bumper with a requisite Mustang embossment.
Large polished stainless exhaust tips peek out from either side
under the bumper and charcoal black Race Star Industries wheels are
on all 4 corners wrapped in skinny M&H Racemaster 185/55R17
rubber up front and ultra sticky Hoosier Quick-Time Pro
27/11.50-15LT's in the back from 2021 and 2022 respectively.
Interior
Sweet high back bucket seats in Graphite leather with plenty of
body hugging side panels keep you snugly in the seats when you are
doing doughnuts in the parking lot. Throwback inserts with
perforated tuck and roll inserts and a white border stripe up top
present in more graphite with the driver's seat showing a bit of
leather wrinkling and age wear along with a few mars and color loss
on the outer bolster. The iconic Mustang twin eyebrow dash in black
shows a peppering of retro black face and white letter gauges
inserted within a silver bezels creates a stealthy look for the
interior. There is a band of black vinyl hugging the bottom of the
dash, and the other side for the glovebox is also black. A rear 2
plus 2 bench is in and can be folded down for extra access to trunk
storage. In the console we see the black with red stitching leather
wrapped shifter and as the center console rises to the dash, we see
the heater knobs and a Pioneer double-din stereo. Gracing the
driver's A-pillar are twin pods for boost and air fuel ratio
courtesy of AEM. Nicely preserved black carpet floods the floors
and all forms like the door panels and center console all make
heavy use of the french curve.
Drivetrain
A 4.6 Liter DOHC 32 valve V8 which produced a whopping 310
horsepower in stock trim is now on serious steroids and is making a
dyno proven 489hp. This monster power number happens thanks in part
to a Procharger P1SC supercharger and 4 Crane 228/500-12 camshafts.
A Tremec TR3650 5-speed manual transmission is on back, and Ford
provides the 8.8-inch which has been built to handle anything you
can throw at it.
Undercarriage
Some surface rust is noted on the untreated components but all else
is either a sea of black, aluminum, or shiny stainless for the
exhaust piping and driveshaft as well as the flooring and unibody.
Keeping this supersonic screamer surefooted is an independent coil
spring suspension for the front, and a 4 link with coil spring
independent rear suspension for the back all with performance coil
springs. Power disc brakes are on all 4 corners with Brembo front
rotors and PBR calipers all around. A dual exhaust system with SLP
stainless steel mufflers give this car its growl. We note the
addition of bolted in subframe connectors for extra chassis
strength.
Drive-Ability
A quick startup, windows down and off to the test track I went like
a red streak on an attempt to break the sound barrier. Here it
handled very nicely, you can feel the 489 horses pushing you along,
and braking brings all this fun to halt. All functions were working
just swimmingly including the AC
For its day it was a definite powerhouse and today it's a killer
classic with nearly 490hp. 1 of 1,259 built in this color
combination, a built to the stars drivetrain and that retina
searing Torch Red paint makes for a great package. All you have to
do now is "pony" up the dough!
