Vehicle Description
1968 Ford Mustang Hardtop
There is symbolism in that logo in front. The logo of the car is a
Mustang horse galloping from right to left. It was created by
automotive designer Philip Thomas Clark. The horse has a strong
connection to the American West, but the symbolism runs deeper.
According to some reports, the horse represents American expansion
and freedom. Others say the logo is moving to the left because
Clark was right-handed and it was easier for him to draw that way.
Either way, and as they say the rest is history!
For consignment, a very fine example of a 1968 Mustang with a
laundry list of new items installed since this past January. During
the restoration, some GT features were added on along with plenty
of new parts for the interior, sporty wheels and tires, a stiffened
suspension, and beautiful paint, all powered by a 289ci V8 which is
original! Have a close look at this one, and not unlike the
consignor when he purchased the car, you will be SOLD!
Exterior
We see the iconic look to this 1968 version now with center fog
lights mounted in the grille. All laser straight steel with nicely
minded gaps, and bathed in a beautiful Gulfstream Aqua metallic
paint hue, a tasteful color change applied better than the factory
could with a few areas of dry application and inclusions! Covering
the roof is a black vinyl top in very good condition, but we do
note some bubbling underneath which could either be rust or excess
glue from the installation. The chrome and trimming look shiny and
like new, and right down to the hockey stick cove, the trimming is
near perfect. On the back the new rear for this year uses the
inward V shaped sergeant stripe tail lights. Nice trimming
highlights the aqua and add in a shiny bumper large bezels on the
roll pan for the backup lights and a chromed badged gas cap in the
center, and we are good to go. 14-inch polished American Racing
Torque Thrust wheels are on and wrapped in front by 215/70R14's all
around.
Interior
A work of art with some new parts, it still sports the original
shifter which can be seen sitting by itself in mid hump. Turning
oureyes to the dash we see the factory Philco AM radio and just
under the dark turquoise top is a shape matching wood grain panel.
This has a round factory gauge setup that uses large shiny bezels
to land either side of the steering column, and just above and
peppering between these large gauges is a trio of more new gauges,
accurate and easy to read. Below is an aqua painted panel which has
the knobs and pulls within it. Climate sliders are to the driver's
left and reside in a smaller wood grained panel. Aqua colored vinyl
covers the buckets which have been overstuffed and sport smooth
outer bolsters, and tuck and roll inserts. The same for the rear
bench but with dark turquoise insets, which along with the bucket's
floats in a sea of like new aqua carpeting. More horizontal tuck
and roll for the door panels which present like new with shiny
actuators and cranks. Also of note is a wood rimmed steering wheel,
and a nice tight headliner also in turquoise with a factory
overhead console.
Drivetrain
Under the hood resides a correct 289ci V8 topped with a 2-barrel
carburetor. This transmits power to the ground through C4 automatic
transmission, and an 8-inch rear axle. The exhale shows with dual
piping and stock replacement mufflers which gives the 68 'Stang a
melodious tone. Our consignor notes that the engine was recently
treated to a new tune up and the carburetor was rebuilt.
Undercarriage
During the restoration the underside was left alone as things
remain very solid on the structuralfront. Solid unibody rails
provide the backbone for the factory black undercoated flooring and
suspension even with a peppering of surface rust on the usual
suspects. Power steering is on along with 4 wheeldrum brakes and we
note a new fuel tank, sender. All is looking fine underneath just
like the topside.
Drive-Ability
This car fired right up, and after a bit of a warm up period, ran
very smoothly, (although it could use the rebuiltcarburetor in the
trunk installed), drove nicely, and had good acceleration and
handling. It is a good highway cruiser as well. It is also noted it
has a nice engine sound emanating from the exhaust. Overall, our
drive was pleasant but a few frowns crept up. The clock did not
keep time, the radio didn't turn on, the AC blew cool but not cold,
and the high beamswitch was stuck in the hi-beam position.
Well done and not like your steak, a driveable restoration that is
90% finished, just a bit more TLC will bring this well running
example up to snuff. It's all there in our South mallway, ready to
be driven away into the sunset.
