A classic from the moment it was announced in March 1963 at the Geneva Motor Show, the W113-generation SL-Class features timeless styling penned by designer and artist Paul Bracq, a 'safety body' incorporating crumple zones, and a smooth-revving Inline-6. The car, initially available only as a roadster, was immediately welcomed by buyers, particularly celebrities, who appreciated it for its comfort and performance. Over its production lasting until 1971, the W113 received a number of updates, most notably an increase in its engine's displacement from the original 2.3 Liters to 2.5, then 2.8 Liters, to increase drivability. Other changes to improve safety and comfort were incorporated as well.
Starting with the single-year-only 250 SL, a second body style, the 'California Coupe' became available. While the roadster had a manually folding soft top and a removable hardtop, the 'California Coupe' only had the former - the space that would otherwise hold a folded soft top dedicated to a folding rear seat. Most buyers preferred the original two-seater roadster, so 'California Coupes' are reasonably rare and are, therefore, quite desirable today.
The magnificent 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280 SL 'California Coupe' Roadster featured here is finished in distinctive Satin Beige Metallic over Cognac leather. This incredible motorcar was sold new in Van Nuys, California and remained in California for most of its existence. Today, this 280 SL presents in spectacular condition, benefiting from a high-level restoration some years prior. This motorcar is one of very few examples produced in February of 1971, the last month of production for this coveted model. Equipped with nearly every available factory option, including air conditioning, a Becker Mexico AM/FM radio with cassette, and power steering/brakes, this is the perfect example to add to any premier collection. We are proud to offer this exquisite 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280 SL 'California Coupe' Roadster to the most particular collector, investor, or enthusiast who understands and appreciates the investment potential of this great classic.
