Vehicle Description
1964 Ford Fairlane 500 Hardtop
Ford TV commercials in 1964 used the character Hazel as well as the
Peanuts cartoon characters. The Ford Motor Company was a sponsor of
the show, and also sponsored The Ford Show during the late 1950's.
For the 1964 year, Ford added a Sport Coupe, which gave the
Fairlane a 289ci V8, a stiffer suspension, and a louder
exhaust.
For consignment, a back half tubbed, Blue Oval Fairlane 500 with a
heavily souped up V8 and some updated suspension. She's looking very
sporty with some aluminum racing wheels, and very well done paint
and trimmings. This one is a driver, but presents nicely, and runs
just fab so don't be afraid to blow out the carbon tearing it up on
the quarter mile!
Exterior
Bedecked in aheavily patinedfinish of Rangoon Red, this car does
have some rust and lots of areas of paint pop off. The body itself
presents with areas of prior filler cracking and blowing out from
rust underneath as well as areas of bubbling, and heavy invasive
rust on the bottoms of the lower rear quarters. From its jet
contrail shaped trim spear starting from the front and leading to
the rear of the back quarter with a crescendo of angled bump outs
just prior to the rear wheel wells creating a "vent", we can see
some added excitement in the form of a dual bordered white field
encased in the dual borders in chrome. On the bottom of the B
pillar is another horizontal wide strip of stainless with a Ford
badge of the era plunked in for good measure. The back panel of
this car utilizes turbine style round tail lights which flank a
shiny chrome and black badge with Fairlane 500 and a run of
textured aluminum rear trim. Both bumpers are shiny and the thin
bar eggcrate grille up front along with the dual headlights give
the car a bit of a sinistergrin when facing it. 15-inch brushed
finish riveted aluminum wheels are on all 4 corners with 26x7.50
pizza cutters up front and some steamroller sized 33x18.50's on the
back.
Interior
Swinging one of the doors and we are greeted with a mix of red
metal and stitched panels vinyl molded panels holding shiny cranks
and actuators. These panels are missing the armrests and show with
slight soiling and waviness. A front low back split bench in
wonderful red puffy tuck and roll inserts and smooth red bolsters
have a thick silvered piping separating them. This carries through
to the rear seats, where see a full bench version in showroom
condition. The center of the rear bench has a wide red vertical
band and is flanked by snappy red panels. We note the addition of a
black padded vinyl headrest for the driver that is attached to the
fully encompassing roll cage. The dash front in brushed aluminum
matte finish and black panels with medium red strips framing above
and below. Below are the factory heater slides, and stock AM radio
above all within a polished chrome band. Nice red carpeting floods
the floors with a Hurst shifter on the hump, and above is a white
headliner in vinyl which frames the black padded roll
cageperfectly.
Drivetrain
Benefitting from massive engine change, we lift off the pin on
steel hood to reveal a Ford 460ci V8 engine that has been bored and
stroked, however our consignor did not provide any information to
determine the newly found cubic inches. Dual 4-barrel Holley
carburetors rest between a bird catcher through the hood scoop up
top and down below is a Weiand tunnel ram intake. FRPP Cobra Jet
aluminum cylinder heads have been bolted on along with snake-like
long tube headers. We are gazing at a nicely preserved and
customized black and brushed aluminum bay that shows with a shock
tower delete, but more on that in the undercarriage section. An
adaptor plate allows a built to thehilt 2-speed Powerglide
automatic transmission with a transbrake and racing converter to be
bolted to the mill. Catching all this power and turning it into
tire shredding force is a narrowed and braced Ford 9" axle.
Undercarriage
Raising this racer up in the air reveals astructurally sound
environment with a dose of road dirt, patina and surface rust, but
all things remain solid. Up front we note independent coil over
suspension with a shock tower delete performed and out back is a
ladder bar arrangement with coil overs to help those big sticky
meats hook up properly. Disc brakes are on the front and in the
back drum brakes provide the whoah factory. A dual Flowmaster
exhaust ends right under the rear axle and all underneath is just
fiiiine-O-mite!
Drive-Ability
A super quick starter, a smooth idler while she warmed up, and we
were off! Nice power and pickup, fine handling and no inoperable
devices to speak of save for the heater blower not blowing. A truly
fine ride, and can kick some ass at the late night drags or the
strip anytime you want.
To sum it up, a hot rodded and race ready example of the 64
Fairlane with the exterior and interior showing patina but still
presentable enough when the competition is viewing your tail
lights. Some add-ons for performance and for the suspension have
yielded a cruiser and bruiser right out of 1964.
