Vehicle Description
1981 Jeep CJ5
An early version initially called the "Willys Overland" morphed
from military GP, (general purpose), vehicle to the mass produced
CJ, short for "civilian Jeep". More than 1.5 million CJ Jeeps were
built, having continued the same basic body style for 45 years
since the Jeep first appeared. Widely regarded as "America's
workhorse", the CJs have been described as "probably the most
successful utility vehicle ever made". The word Jeep is an acronym
of the letters GP.
The call of the wild, the great outdoors, into the great wide open,
getting a little mud on the tires, all representative of this 1981
CJ which has undergone a partial restoration with nice paint,
ablack bikini top, and a new interior. It can now take you
anywhere, anytime, in any weather. You decide, the wild is your
oyster...(sic.)
Due to modifications of the emissions control devices installed by
the manufacturer, please check your local, state, and federal laws
to determine if this vehicle is applicable for use on public
highways in your area.
Exterior
All straight and turn, all tricked out with extra LED lighting, a
tubular off road front bumper, a newer Bikini top, 15-inch glossy
black wheels and Goodyear tires in the form of 35x12.5R15LT mudders
including the BF Goodrich spare. The light blue painted steel is
all good with just a few areas of bubbling, prior body repairs, and
just a few war scars, but they are minor. A black bikini top is on
toprotect you and your passengers from the elements, although
without doors you may get a little wet or even sunburnt. Black
lightweight plastic fenders are bolted onto the blue body and keep
the mudslinging to a minimum and in back, a hitch mount is on the
tubular bumper with the full size spare mounted above on a swing
out mount allowing access to the small rear storage area. We are
hearing the call of the wild! Wahoooo wahoooo.... wahoooo whaooo
whaooo! (Think Mandalorian)
Interior
Since I fall into the slightly portly category and also have bad
knees, I donned my stepladder for the climb into the interior.
Speaking of which, as we slip inside on the new high back vinyl
buckets which are in very nice condition and have integrated
headrests. All covered in smooth tan vinyl and a new rear bench
seat follows the same motif as the buckets. We note new seat belts
for all seating positions as well. As we move forward from this box
the floors are finished in black and blue and a trio of the factory
4x4 and transmission shiftersreside here just prior to the dash.
This dash is finished with a custom brushed aluminumpanel with a
black padded topper and is peppered with all the essential gauges
and then some. Toggles and pulls abound as does labeling for all
the controls. In front of the passenger is a chromed steel "Jesus"
bar and a body matching glove box door. Fronting the dash is a Jeep
3 spoke drilled and polished rally steering wheel. Note the front
windshield can be lowered for extra versatility. Also, a roll bar
has been added just in case you are a bit too ambitious on the
vertical climb.
Drivetrain
Under the flip up externally latched hood is a non original AMC
engine in 304ci form. It has a Holley 2-barrel carburetor bolted on
and on the back is a 3-speed manual transmission. Way out back is a
3.54 axle courtesy of Dana and a pull of the transfer case level
engages the front axle for some serious off-roading.
Undercarriage
Black paint everywhere for the floor pans with some slight surface
rust and some invasive rust to note in the left rear wheelhouse.
4-wheel leaf spring suspension has been treated to new rear springs
and shackles with a slight lift installed along with a small body
lift provide ample ground clearance for you off road adventures.
Disc brakes are reserved for the front and drums are in the rear.
Dual exhaust, sans catalyticconverters, snakes its way rearward and
is equipped with stock replacement stylemufflers.
Drive-Ability
I just love the ingenuity that goes into some of the CJ mods and
this one does not disappoint. I climbed up over the threshold with
some help from my crack decoder and was off to the test track. Here
it did very well as expected, great acceleration, solid bias free
panic stopping and good handling. I did go into 4x4 mode, and it
worked well, but did not get to actually climb anything! All
functions were spot on.
Grab your groover, mount the kayak and go exploring, climbing,
camping and whatever else we do in the great outdoors. Let's get a
little mud on the tires!
