For Sale: 1976 Chrysler New Yorker in Morgantown, Pennsylvania

Vehicle Description

1976 Chrysler New Yorker Brougham Hardtop

If you see a faded sign at the side of the road that says
Fifteen miles to the, love shack, love shack yeah
I'm headin' down the Atlanta highway
Lookin' for the love getaway
Headed for the love getaway, love getaway
I got me a car, it's as big as a whale
And we're headin' on down to the love shack
I got me a Chrysler, it seats about twenty
So hurry up and bring your jukebox money

For consignment, a large and long piece of Detroit iron, built back in the day when gas was still under a dollar, and status was measured by the inch. Purchased new at Bermont Motors in scenic Gilbertsville, PA and driven by the wife until her passing in 1998, this 232.7" long cruiser is sporting a replacementengine that was installed at 40,000 miles leaving the current engine with about 60,000 on it. All of the original documents, including the order form are included with your purchase and this car is fully functional with the exception of the AC. Equipped with the St. Regis package, you've never looked so good cruising in this white whale.

Exterior
Hidden headlights flanking a very sleek vertical waterfall split grille leads the way. Spinnaker White covers all the straight steel panels which are minding their gaps nicely. A long long rear quarter and trunk line offer up a 3 bedroom size apartment when times get tough! Up top, the forward roof section is dressed with like new white vinyl that wraps down and around the rear opera windows but does not cover the sharply flowing C-pillars, giving the roof line a defined air of distinction. A light blue twin pinstripe runs the upper belt line offering up contrast to the white paint as do all the chromed trimmings in spear, window surround and shiny bumper form. In back a vertical design emulates the front and has a long side to side tail lighting setup hovering at the pointed ends of the rear fenders above the massive bumper. Single exhaust peeks out from underneath and 15-inch Mopar road wheels are on all 4 corners and these are wrapped in thin whites in 225/75R15 format. The lowers of the body, particularly below the chrome trimmed rub strip shows up in slightly different white shade and there is slight bubbling and evidence of body work on the lower panels.

Interior
A swing of the blue vinyl paneled doors shows plenty of chrome edging, wood applique, and actuators revealed in good condition. A snappy blue carpet strip is reserved for the bottoms. Inside, blue front puffy buttoned pillow top buckets are in, and in the center is an original armrest which folds up to become a center seat, albeit somewhat small. We are firmly in the Brougham/St. Regis area of badging which shows up on the center of the blue steering wheel. In contrast to the blue is a full wood applique dash and blue carpeting as a base for the chairs. In back is an original bench seat which again has a central folding armrest. A tight blue vinyl headliner hangs above and the song is right.... judging by the interior size, this car seats about 20

Drivetrain
Under the hood is a replaced at 40,000 mile 400ci V8 rated at 210hp, which is plenty of power to move all this steel along at highway speeds and acceleration. It has a single 4-barrel carburetor atop, and an A727 Torqueflite automatic tranny on back. The rear axle is a 2.91 geared unit. A stock style single exhaust is on to let this big fish exhale. Our consignor notes that the oil was recently changed, new plugs and wires were installed, the coolant was flushed, and the rear axle oil was changed.

Undercarriage
Underneath has spotty surface rust on the usual suspects and certainly no invasive rust or structural problems. Some road dirt is also noted on various parts of the suspension which is independent torsion bar front, and leaf sprung for the back. Power disc brakes are up front and in the back are power drums. We note a rebuilt brake booster, new master cylinder, new shocks were installed all around, and an entire new fuel system including the tank, lines, sender and fuel pump was installed as well.

Drive-Ability
A big car with the biiiiig car ride, it has smooth acceleration, bias free braking, and silk like shifting for the automatic tranny. The AC is not working, and until the engine warmed up the idle was a bit rough.

Not oft seen, this 70's designed large car was a last gasp during all the fuel embargo and competition from the imports from Asia. Neat design, hidden headlights a plus, and things are large and in charge for this New Yorker. A fantastic cruiser with the length to impress even the highest executive.
