Details
This rare, European spec, 1985 Porsche 944 is right-hand-drive and powered by a 2.5L inline 4-cylinder engine linked to a 5-speed manual transmission. It has been restored in its original Guards Red with black vinyl and striped cloth interior and currently shows 14,920 miles on the odometer but true mileage is unknown. The European spec lacked some standard US features like air conditioning but produced more power from the factory. This example includes a number of performance modifications including an upgraded radiator, aftermarket exhaust and air filter, quick-release hood pins, OMP steering wheel, and 964 Cup Wheels. The vehicle was restored and modified by the previous owner in the UK and includes a wealth of service history and documentation. It was acquired by the seller in 2021, imported to the US in 2023, and is located in Maryland.
The third-party inspection report and detailed photos show a nicely modified example with a recently rebuilt engine and refreshed exterior. It’s been well maintained over the years and with the major service items attended to, this right-hand-drive 944 can be a great driver or the foundation for a track car. Photos show some inconsistency in the paint and wear on the door handles, but the exterior is solid and well-presented for its age. The interior has not been restored, and the photos and inspection show torn cloth seats with general wear on the seats and a modified dashboard. The inspection and owner confirm that mechanically, the car performs as it was designed. The sale includes a stack of service receipts, the car’s European license plates, an auxiliary gas can, and a car cover.
This Porsche 944 is being sold through a CLASSIC.COM Pro and is located in Columbia, MD.
About the model
Porsche introduced the base model 944 for the 1982 model year. At its launch, it featured a 2.5 liter four cylinder engine capable of producing 143 hp for US market vehicles. European versions were capable of 167 hp. In mid-1985, the 944 underwent its first significant changes which included a number of interior features and suspension improvements. For the 1987 model year, the 944 Motronic DME was updated, and newly incorporated safety elements which included anti-lock braking system (ABS) and airbags. In early 1989 Porsche upgraded the base model 944 engine from 2.5 liters to 2.7 liters, with a rated power output of 163 hp versus 158 hp for the 1988 2.5 liter version. Most 944's were produced with a 5-speed manual transmission, but a small number of 3-speed automatics were made for the base model.
