Ask any Mopar enthusiast to name some of the most rare HEMI powered
muscle cars ever produced and most will immediately go to the
Daytona, Superbird or Cudas, and rightfully so. We'd venture very
few would name off a 1957 Dodge D-501 Coronet. It's been over 66
years since the short lived program came to a screeching halt when
NASCAR outlawed the D-501 in May of 1957. Originally planned for
100 units to satisfy NASCARS homologation requirements, however
after NASCAR's decision to outlaw the vehicle, Dodge halted
production and it is believed that only 56 were built of the
planned 100. Today, what you are looking at is the real deal, - A
1957 Dodge 501 Coronet that has been meticulously researched,
restored and owned by the legendary Don Miller, former Penske
Racing South President.
Since the D-501 program didn't even last a year, the very existence
of the program or cars are lost to a many Mopar enthusiasts.
Surviving examples of the D-501 program are few and far between, of
those 56, less than 10 are known to exist still today. This
particular example is simply stunning in person. The recipient of a
multi-year extensive restoration back to factory specifications,
today it stands tall as not only one of the rarest but cleanest
vehicles we have ever seen, making this car a genuine collector's
dream. Its scarcity amplifies its allure, attracting enthusiasts
and historians alike who recognize its significance in the annals
of American motorsport.
Adding to its allure is its documented owner history. Each name on
the ownership record adds a layer of authenticity, tracing back the
journey of this extraordinary vehicle through time. This documented
provenance not only enhances its historical value but also provides
a glimpse into the lives of those who cherished this car across the
decades. Mr. Miller painfully searched for a real D-501 for nearly
10 years before purchasing this example from 57 Heaven in Arizona.
Time hadn't been kind to the iconic Mopar, but over the next few
years Milller would work with some of the biggest names in the
industry to accurately restore this iconic rarity to an absolute
showstopper.
Powered by the original 354-cu.in. Chrysler Hemi that was
ultimately the reason the program was unfortunately banned from
NASCAR. The restoration of the engine was performed by
professionals including Don Brown of Burlington, North Carolina,
who ordinarily works on factory lightweight Fords. He was
responsible for restoring the fuel system. The Penske Racing engine
shop and founding Holman-Moody engine man Pete Taylor performed the
rebuild on the engine. The results are simply astounding when you
pop open the hood and see it in person.
Owning the 1957 Dodge D-501 Coronet is not just acquiring a classic
car; it's becoming a custodian of an illustrious legacy. It's an
opportunity to preserve a rare piece of automotive heritage,
allowing its story to continue in the hands of a passionate
collector. For enthusiasts who understand the significance of the
D-501 program and crave the thrill of owning a truly rare
automobile, this 1957 Dodge D-501 Coronet is an embodiment of
automotive excellence and a window into a captivating chapter of
racing history.
