Vehicle Description

1992 Pontiac Grand Prix Richard Petty Edition

1992 marked the end of an era in NASCAR as it was the final year for Richard "The King" Petty. He took his final ride around Atlanta Motor Speedway in front of 160,000 fans, closing out a very successful career that spanned over 35 years. He racked up 200 wins and 7 championships in the Winston Cup Series. It was the most for any driver in NASCAR. The last 12 years of his career, Petty drove STP sponsored Pontiacs. To honor the most winning driver in NASCAR, Pontiac Motors Division released a "Richard Petty Edition" trim level for its 1992 Pontiac Grand Prix Coupe. It was limited to 1,000 units and could only be ordered in red, white, or metallic blue with color matching wheels. The package came with a special 3.4 liter Quad Cam V6 producing about 210hp paired with either a 5-speed manual or more common 4-speed auto. Styling cues for this edition included a rear deck spoiler, a special graphics package striping that included Petty's signature, and a dash plaque that showed the serial number for this limited series. Each car came with a letter of authenticity from Richard Petty himself. Surprisingly, this trim level only added $399 to the Grand Prix's $20,000 price tag. Petty's success continued even after his retirement from driving in 1992. He would still hold the top spot in the family business-Petty Enterprises, and now, Richard Petty Motorsports. In all, Petty Enterprises totaled 268 victories before merging with Gillett Evernham Motorsports for the 2009 season to become Richard Petty Motorsports.

GENTLEMEN START YOUR ENGINES...Now appearing leading the pack out of turn 4 of our South Mallway for consignment, a 1 of the 1,000 built for the 1992 model year Pontiac Grand Prix Richard Petty Edition. The only color choices for Petty cars were red, white or the metallic blue seen here. Changes over a standard Grand Prix include flared fenders, fog lights, dual exhaust, a different front clip, and an aero kit complete with a trunk-mounted wing. Richard Petty's signature appears on a decal on the trunk as well, and there's specialized badging on the doors. Staggered offset OEM wheels are a period-perfect set of color-matched mesh items-complete with Richard Petty's silhouette on the center caps! Coming to us with 38,196 title verified actual miles, it's time to add a bit of NASCAR history to your collection.

Exterior
What other color out of the 3 choices available screams Richard Petty other than the Petty Blue Metallic that bathes all the steel and neoprene panels that are straight and true on this Pontiac. The rounded front of the car looks much like scowling eyebrows and the air intakes in the wrap around front bumper fit this look as a pair of flared nostrils. The cats-eye squinted lights lead back to the hood as it overhangs the rectangular headlights tucked just above the body matching bumper. This bumper has horizontal ribs within its design, and these ribs carry the entire circumference of the car residing just above the flared rocker fairings on either side, and through the rear bumper. Gaps are nicely minded, the safety glass has black surrounds, and a nice panoramic B pillar window offers up plenty of wide vista viewing as the world goes by in the rear bench. Pinstriping and Grand Prix decaling in STP red hovers above the cladding and on the back large tail lighting resides on each corner and flanks a nice sized trunk. The paint overall is very good, and some snappy 16-inch Petty Edition specific blue lace wheels are on all 4 corners.

Interior
A swing of the doors and we see expertly molded plastic and vinyl in light and medium gray making up the tops of the door panels, which is a nice contrast to the exterior Petty Blue. On the bottom is gray carpeting, and within are controls for power locks, windows and a side view mirror and black door actuating handle. Inside, high-backed styled bucket seats in light gray broadcloth velour are flanking a center console, also in gray. A gray broadcloth velour rear bench is behind the buckets and is fairly easily accessible for the passengers that are destined to sit there. We note some age appropriate bolster wear on the driver's bucket along with a few small holes in the same area. Upfront is the original analog gauge black dash with instrument inset in front of the leather wrapped wheel, and speaking of the wheel...the center hub is loaded with push buttons for various radio controls. We note a mere 38,196 original miles on this vehicle. No cracks, runs drips or errors for the dash top also in dark gray. Gray carpeting does a clean sweep through the interior and above a gray headliner is nice and tight.

Drivetrain
Under the hood is unrestored although clean with some dust and dirt but no rust 3.4 liter DOHC V6 mill. It has multiport EFI and a 4T60 4-speed automatic transmission. A 3.33 final drive is on this model.

Undercarriage
Underneath straight rust-free steel stamped floor pans and solid unibody construction abound. No rust, just Petty Blue factory overspray and organized brake fluid lines along with the exhaust keep things very simple. Independent front and independent with a transverse leaf spring suspension in back provide the ride, and power disc brakes are all around.

Drive-Ability
With obvious care and ample time of being garage kept, this car started quickly and off to the test track in a flash where it performed like a Petty Blue streak! While it's a far cry from the Cup cars of the 1992 era, we experienced stellar acceleration, solid braking which was bias free, good handling and a comfy broadcloth interior with all working accessories save for the AC blowing warm and the low fuel light staying on.

The consignor cared enough about this vehicle to make sure it was in tip top shape prior to its arrival and taking up residence in our Hallowed Halls. Now here for the taking, a true piece of Richard Petty and Pontiac history in low mileage and limited production form. I see the checkered flag in the distance!
