Vehicle Description
1963 Ford Galaxie 500 Convertible
For those of you who used their formative years to educate and
mostly entertain themselves with the boob tube, you probably caught
an episode or two of Andy of Mayberry. A number of awesome cars
were featured in the Andy Griffith Show over its nine year run, but
Griffith's squad cars were always Ford Galaxie 500 sedans. Fords
were increasingly featured as the show reached its later years,
undoubtedly because of a sponsorship from the Ford Motor
Company.
For consignment, a 1963 Galaxie 500 convertible that I would
classify as a stunner and even go as far to proclaim it is a piece
of creamy white chocolate bon bon eye candy, with a cherry filling
in the center. George Jetson-esque styling on the steel side slabs,
plenty of chrome trimming adornments and beautiful badging, snappy
wheels, andits a convertible!! This is a very nice morsel of early
60's road rocketing donning our Hallowed Halls.
Exterior
Corinthian White in a respray covers straight steel panels that
maintain very good gaps. The metal is near perfect, the paint is
shiny and deep, and is highlighted by an upper trim spear that
works its way to the rear, heads briefly downward, then returns to
just in front of the front quarter. In front of the downward turn
on the rear quarter, is a series of vertical rectangles which add
to the jet age mystique. Dual front headlights within a well
preserved shiny and fine detailed designed egg crate grille has a
nice cloisonne badge in the center make up the front view and the
front bumper is very nice as well. As we move to the rear, round
jet engine style tail lights have beautiful bezels and 4 spikes
that come to the center and form a circle around a backup light.
More egg crate shaver guard styling is on the rear below the trunk,
and below is a nicely preserved rear bumper. Not to be forgotten is
the convertible top in pristine shiny coated canvas with a plastic
rear window, clean and clear. Chrome 15-inch Kelsey Hayes wire
wheels looking like a 4 leaf clover design, adorn all 4 corners.
All metal on the car is original and this car is a beauty.
Interior
With a swing of the doors we will be seeing oxblood red, all
beautifully restored to original configuration, and all in fab
condition. The front split bench is red tuck and roll inserts and
smooth red bolsters with some white piping racing around the border
of the two. The rear seat sprawls from panel to panel and mimics
the front. All upholstery appears to be new old stock material and
was possibly hand sewn to make the seats better than new. A very
clean and shiny red original dash and steering wheel are noted, and
all is looking futuristic for 1963. Think the dash of the
Millennium Falcon only its a Galaxy! (sic). The instrument cluster
has a spaceship styling to it, and we see an original AM radio in
the center which is an aluminum polished horizontal strip below the
red metal still on the dash front. Deep red carpet floods the
floors, and above the top is padded on the inside.
Drivetrain
This Cruise-O-Matic, (dontcha luv those 60's tranny names??),
3-speed automatic equipped car comes with a completely correct
352ci V8 and has a single 2-barrel carburetor. Ford Blue painted
valve coverings and a trademark single snout air cleaner allows
plenty of fresh clean air to flow to the single 2bbl below. Power
from this mill makes its way to the rear wheels through a Ford 9
inch 3.00 rear. Noiiiiice!
Undercarriage
Underneath has also been fully attended to with black painted
structural steel and floor pans and rockers. Independent coil
springs for the front and leaf springs on back provide the
futuristic ride. An upgrade to power brakes are on all 4 corners
with discs in the front and drums in the rear and a stock
replacement dual exhaust is now installed and is clean and rust
free.
Drive-Ability
As expected from a car in this condition, she fired right up, and
with a shift of the lever to D I was off like a prom dress. This
car is a great large cruiser, smooth ride, and no creaking or
squeaking when turning the corners. Plenty of power with some to
spare, good handling for any evasive action that may be necessary.
Awesomely solid bias free panic braking if needed for the quick
stop.
A beautiful example of the Galaxie in 500 format. An excellent
exterior, like new interior red, and lots of power from the correct
352ci mill, it does not get much better than this example if you
are in the market for some 1960's power iron. Ok Andy give 'em the
lights and siren they're pulling over and gettin' a ticket. Start
the bidding!!
