Vehicle Description
1964 Austin Healey 3000
The Austin-Healey 3000 is a British sports car built from 1959 to
1967. It is the best known of the "big Healey" models. The car's
bodywork was made by Jensen Motors and the vehicles were assembled
at BMC's MG Works in Abingdon, alongside the corporation's MG
models. During its production life, the car transitioned from an
open sports car, albeit with a child-transporting 2 plus 2 option,
to a sports convertible. In 1963, 91.5 percent of all Austin-Healey
3000 cars were exported: mostly to North America. The 3-litre 3000
was a highly successful car, which won its class in many European
rallies in its heyday and is still raced in classic car
competitions by enthusiasts today.
For consignment, a car which fits the definition of British sports
car. Long hood, convertible, short curved back deck, wire wheels,
2-seater, (small rear seats), stick shift, and a beautiful tone to
the exhaust as one motors down the curved blue highways. All in
wonderfully restored and preserved condition, bathed in ...Red!
Exterior
This long-hooded chrome trimmed scooped oval grilled car is spot
on, and spit spot on the restoration with beautiful red paint,
beautiful chrome, and a nice black canvas drop top. Tastefully
curved fenders with a single round headlight with chrome bezel and
a top trim piece for the front fenders. The rear, albeit small, has
a nice sloping down curve to complete the car. Window trimmings are
all excellent, fender mounted mirrors are looking good for looking
back and a nifty set of wire knockoffs are chromed and all shiny on
each corner. This sports car also comes with a white plastic
accessory hardtop. 15-inch Minator wide cast spoked wheels are
wrapped with 185VR15 rubber all around and for the purists the
original chrome wire knock off wheels are included.
Interior
Inside 2 black leather covered bomber style rounded low back
buckets flank the center red carpet covered hump. These are nicely
aged with no tears, just a few creases that come with well-aged
leather and sport some wide cream colored piping on their edges.
Upfront, a padded dash top covers a wood burl dash front. Here we
see round blackface Smiths gauges with chromed bezels and a few
pulls and knobs. On top of a black padded dash top is a center dash
stalk mounted rear view mirror, decidedly British if I must say so
mate! The dash center is in black and has the temp slider and a
line up of chromed toggle switches. This black panel melts into a
center console which houses the shifter and an ash receptacle.
Fronting the dash is a wood rimmed 3 pointed star machined center
steering wheel. In back of the buckets are 2 simple backless jump
seats for those who want to ride along with the thrill!
Cracking.
Drivetrain
As I flip the bonnet, I would expect nothing less than a fully
buttoned up 2912cc inline 6-cylinder fed by dual SU HD8 Carburetors
and a 4-speed manual transmission with overdrive on back. 3.55 for
the rear axle and a fine job has been performed on the restoration
of the engine bay. Chip Chip Cheerio!
Undercarriage
Underneath has all been painted black over the factory red and it's
chipping off just a bit and shows some patina for the X frame and
floor pans as well the rockers. A stainless steel muffler is on and
black rust-free suspension and drivetrain with some light oiling is
noted. Disc brakes are upfront, and drums for the boot, and we are
ready for a tool.
Drive-Ability
This car is cold blooded to start but once it gets running it purrs
great, and after awarmupit was motoring off to the test track. With
great handling, acceleration, quick shifting, and bias free
braking, I felt like Nigel Mansell gliding her through Maggots and
Becketts, and imagining the old RAF arriving and leaving for their
sorties. I just love British sports cars, and this one is a 5-star
version. And you get the Austin Healey 3000 hot seat after it warms
up as the muffler is directly under the driver's seat!
Fully restored, all looking chipper, and running like a pocket
watch...a must see here in our Classic Mall halls. G'day.
