Vehicle Description
1963 Ford Falcon Futura Convertible
The Jet age is in full swing, the country is riding high on
Beatlemania, towering beehive hair doo's, fur boots, and getting to
the moon before the end of the decade. Unfortunately, we were
riding low on the assassination of President Kennedy, Russia
launching the first woman into space, and racial equality concerns.
To mirror these times, Ford Motor Company put elements of design
into the Falcon Futura.
There was nothing better than being a TWA pilot or "stewardess" as
this jet set status was all the rage in 1963. And to emulate all
this high-flying high-speed travel for whimsy attitude, we give you
for consignment, a 1963 Ford Falcon Futura convertible. Just look
at that side view and it's as if we are looking at a streaking jet
flying across a blue sky peppered with puffy clouds to some exotic
destination where you sun yourself, drink a cocktail with an
umbrella in it, and eat fondue. A full restoration was completed in
2006 which included a new engine, (Ford Mustang 289), a green dot
C4 transmission and an 8 inch anti slip differential. Wheels
UP!
Exterior
Look ...up in the sky...it's a bird...no it's a plane...no its the
side spear and rocket styling for the front and rear of the car on
this wonderful Futura. Steel panels all bathed in red with a wide
red painted stamped side body spear, and a chromed trim spear
flying from front to to rear on the beltline, beginning as a faux
arrowhead vent and ending as a Futura badge. The simple V shaped
shaver-esqe grille with single headlights on either corner looks
fine with its trimmings, and a shiny front bumper with very light
dulling. A red hood with a chrome trimmed scoop shows early signs
of some manufacturer muscle flexing, but it's still early in the
game. A beige canvas convertible top in good condition is power
actuated and moves up and down smoothly with a plastic rear window.
What a profile on this car with the top down. Pure jet age, I just
cannot say enough about it. Even the tail uses jet engine round
tail lights with half circle stamped steel on either side. Rounding
out all 4 corners are 14-inch Magnum 500 shiny Wheels and like new
raised white letter BFG Radial T/A rubber from 2019.
Interior
It does not get any better than simple red on red, and this car is
as simplistic yet stylish as it gets. Red tuck and roll door panels
with painted red sills are nearly perfect. Seats reverse the
pattern and use red tuck and roll inserts, and deep red smooth
bolsters then turn again to smooth red lower and upper surrounds.
This pattern continues on the rear bench. A very clean and very
original dash utilizes chromed trim, and a red aged bakelite insert
which is topped by the speedometer. Plenty of pull knobs for all
the controls and I feel like I'm in the Jetson's flying car. A very
nicely redone to original look, even a new classic looking sound
system complete with an amp mounted under the front seat. Red
carpet for the floors all in great condition. Pure classic and
looking original for this rocket ship.
Drivetrain
For the 2006 restoration the original engine was pulled and a 1965
Mustang 289 V8 replaced it. The mill was completely rebuilt by
Howards Engine of Scranton PA so it runs like a Swiss watch. On
back is a rare Green Dot C4 automatic tranny and this is coupled
with an 8 inch 3.55 rear pumpkin with TracLoc capabilities. All
clean under this hood.
Undercarriage
Nicely preserved, some steel panels have been added for beefed up
structural stability. These are located just behind the engine and
transmission. Rust free floor pans and rockers, also have some
steel reinforcing panels now installed all part of the factory
bracing. All is very nice and structurally solid for this
underside. Independent suspension with coil springs are upfront,
and leaf springs with traction barsare on the rear for the
suspension. Drum brakes are utilized all around. All braking is
from the '65 mustang and is well maintained.
Drive-Ability
A very nice driver, quick starter, and good handling car. Nothing
is greater than the experience of driving a jet age car with the
top down. There is just something that adds cool to your persona
when doing so. Overall a fun driver, smooth acceleration without
hesitation, and a great cruiser.
This is a really nice car, well done, and all buttoned up with a
new top, and a totally rebuilt and replaced drivetrain courtesy a
1965 Mustang. The interior surfaces are excellent, and the dash is
pure original in a very clean state. A fine classic gracing us here
at Classic Auto Mall, ready for the picking. So, swoop in and claw
this red bird of prey.
