Vehicle Description
1976 Chevrolet Camaro Type LT
With Camaros selling well in 1975 and better in 1976, Chevy saw
little need to change very much at all about the 1976 model. In
fact, on the exterior there were hardly any features to tell the
two year models apart, aside from the new brushed aluminum panel
that appeared between the taillights on Type LT models. Most
changes were under the hood, even though with the continued absence
of the Z28, (it would return the following year), the engine
choices were still held to three. Total production continued on an
upward trek it had been on since 1973, and would continue to climb,
year-to-year, until 1980. 182,959 total Camaros were produced
throughout the 1976 model year.
An original luxury version of the formidable muscle car, theCamaro
right out of1976 in Type LT format. Purchased by our consignor for
his wife, who upon driving it said "it drives like an old car".
This brought about a redux of the suspension and tires, so you can
rest assured it now rides great. Our consignor's wife did not feel
the same, so now the opportunity is yours. This very original
example is now gracing our showroom, this one in fair condition on
the exterior with some dents and dings, mixed with slight rust in
certain areas, the original engine, and a snappy 2-tone
interior.
Exterior
Bathed in black this 2 door luxury touring coupe remains devoid of
any of the hoopla that comes with the muscle cars of the disco
era...no stripes, no spoilers, and no funky ground effect cladding.
Just pure unadulterated Camaro in its purest form. Some dents can
be noted, cracking on a few areas of the paint, and chips
throughout. The front bumper remains in goodcondition with itssatin
shiny finish and inlaid rubber strip as well as large black NTSB
mandate bumper guards. An undulating hood leads back to the raked
and wrap-around style windshield and things are looking good for
the mid 70's. More wrap-around glass is seen for the back light and
just aft is the short and stubby trunk lid. Most of the lower body
sections are suffering from invasive rust of varying degrees, and
overall the body gaps remain straight and fairly true. All window
trim is stainless and in good condition. 14-inch rally wheels are
all around and retain their shine all the while wrapped in BF
Goodrich rubber from the 14th week of 2022.
Interior
The factory seats are still present with smoothwhite vinyl bolsters
and a black and white knitted vinyl for the inserts. The seats are
all good condition save for a few minor seam splits, with front
buckets and a rear 2+2 setup. The door panels appear original and
are clean, tight, and white with more knitted black and white vinyl
inserts and a black trim oval surrounding things. An original dash
fronts the passenger compartment, and has a plastic faux leather
looking panel for the instrument cluster. The instruments are very
clean on the front plastic and remain original. An aftermarket
radio AM/FM/Cassette stereo has been added in the original spot and
the remainder of the dash is textured black plastic. Black carpet
covers the floors and is in good condition. The headliner shows in
black broadcloth and presents with a few wrinkles.
Drivetrain
A correct 305ci V8 with lots of patina and some surface rust and
corrosion, all original graces the engine bay. The factory 2-barrel
carburetor and intake is seen and a TH350 3-speed automatic
transmission can be noted. A 10 bolt rear axle turns the tires.
Undercarriage
Plenty of surface rust intermingles with black paintedsteel tomake
up this overall solid underside. Power disc brakes are on the
front, and power drum brakes on the rear and single exhaust is
noted. Our consignor states that fully redone suspension is on,
with an independent coil spring arrangementup front and leaf
springs with added helper springs in the rear.
Drive-Ability
This car started quickly and ran smoothly. It shifted smoothly and
ran fairly quietly. A/C is there and blows cold. The ride is very
nice but we did note that the wipers hit the rear of the hood and
refuse to wipe, the reverse lights did not illuminate, and the
clock did not keep time.
Some TLC would aid this example of the Type LT Camaro. If you are
looking for a classic that you can make your own with a little bit
of work, come on down to Classic Auto Mall and make this one your
own.
