Vehicle Description
1990 Chevrolet Camaro IROC-Z Convertible
The IROC race series invited champions from all walks of racing,
including NASCAR, CART, Le Mans, and even NHRA. No matter who won,
they were always driving an IROC Camaro and as they say in the biz,
win on Sunday, sell on Monday.
This version of the 1990 Camaro is in full IROC street garb.
Special painted badging, a low-slung windshield, some fairings,
canvas convertible version and a powerful secret lurking under the
hood were just a few of the features that were added to this
version of the Camaro. Built in sunny California and having been
always garage kept, never seeing rain or snow, it's time to pass
this one on instead of letting it sit. This 2 owner car is
presently in the South Mallway of our Hallowed Halls for your
perusal, and having nearly every mechanical aspect gone over and
replaced, along with being finishing in eye catching bright arrest
me red, this IROC Z is one for the record books...I'll keep you in
suspense with the hardcore details, but I reckon this on would give
a real IROC racer of the day a serious run for the money.
NOTE: Due to varying emissions control devices being removed,
please check with your state, county, local or provincial motor
vehicle department to verify the ability to legally register this
vehicle in your area.
Exterior
A nicely applied coating of eye- catching and retina searing Bright
Red paint covers the straight steel body panels, fairings, and
front built in chin spoiler of the car and shows with a few scuffs,
spider cracks and imperfections. Just above the rockers is black
and silver striping that wraps entirely around the car and black
trimmings surround the glass and are also on the door handles. IROC
Z badging is also on the doors and creates a ribbed fade from gray
to white. A scooped hood is now resting between the fenders and the
glossy black scoop leading back to the rakish front glass. Black
canvas is the convertible top with a clear plastic rear window. On
the back, a small spoiler trims off the trunk lid, and on the back
of the car are the iconic Camaro shaped taillights that wrap around
to the rear quarters. Factory correct silver 5 spoke 16-inch Camaro
rims are attached to all 4 corners and noted as "front" and "rear"
wheels because of different offsets and are wrapped in deeply
treaded blackwall rubber. All is just fine with this car's exterior
condition.
Interior
A snazzy gray and black padded tweed bowls you over when you swing
the doors. A smooth vinyl armrest with a long pull arm within this
tweed as is a black plastic panel for the door actuator and sport
rear view mirrors and power lock buttons. The seats in bucket
configuration for the front, also use the tweed for the front
bolsters and upper back panels all in gray, with the remainder of
the seats being black broadcloth with Camaro badged inserts. As an
added texture/color, dark gray trims the backs and headrest sides.
The rear 2 plus 2 bench also is in the same pattern. Think smoking
jacket and a favorite billiard room chair! A black console and dash
house all the critical instrumentation, as well as climate
controls, radio and automatic shift lever. Power windows are
installed here as well. Power locks, power steering, power brakes,
power toggle mirrors and a power driver's seat are working and are
great conveniences with this sports car. Clean black carpeting
floods the floors and this is one tasteful comfortable
interior.
Drivetrain
The beast lurks underneath the louvered hood...this beast specs out
as a 383ci stroker crate V8 making a consignor stated 465hp to give
plenty of smooth power. A single Holley 4-barrel carburetor feeds
the fuel though a lightly polished intake and into the cylinders
via a pair of aluminum cylinder heads. On the back is a T5 5-speed
manual transmission. All this attached to a 10-bolt rear axle that
spins the rear tires with ease. Keeping things cool is an aluminum
radiator with twin electric fans.
Undercarriage
The floor pans are solid, as is the unibody construction and have a
slight patina and the same is seen on the suspension, which
consists of independent coil springs for the front, and a torque
arm and coil springs for the back are seen. Power disc brakes are
on for the front and power drums are equipped on the rear for the
whoah factor. Headers snake their way down from the mill and flow
into a single pipe, sans catalytic converter, before splitting to
dual tail pipes after the Flowmaster muffler.
Drive-Ability
A quick starter, and smooth idle until the warmup was afforded to
me. I slipped into the cloth interior and was grabbed by the seats.
A shift into 1st and I was off like a prom dress, with blistering
acceleration, smooth shifting, and good handling on the test track
things were just fine. She's able to cruise at highway speeds
easily, and I had the top down for my test, and it was a pleasant
experience with plenty of airflow from the outside and the top
manually operating smoothly. I did note the AC is not connected but
who really cares with the top down and the wind in your hair?
Except for the badging and hood, this car is disguised as a mild
mannered everyday 1989 Chevrolet Camaro. A look under the hood, as
well as the IROC status option package L03, makes it anything but
mild mannered. All in very good condition, this car is a definite
goer, but can also be viewed at any car show you may want to drive
it to. Go ahead, get in and turn it over...well the engine, keep
the wheels down on the ground, although they have a tendency to
spin when you get goosey with your boot!
