Upon its debut in 1963, the Porsche 911 was offered only in closed coupe configurations. While buyers were very interested in a convertible version, the possibility of impending changes to the American market’s safety standards that would reportedly make convertibles illegal meant the company felt it necessary to engineer an alternative. So, rather than fully remove any and all elements of the roof, they made the center portion and plastic rear window removable, leaving the B-pillar, covered in now-iconic brushed stainless steel to create the Targa. This setup, which offered the wind-in-your-hair joy of a convertible with safety and weather protection of a coupe, was only offered for a few years before the rear window was switched to permanently fixed glass.

The magnificent 1968 Porsche 911 ‘Soft-Window’ Targa featured here was completed at the factory April 26, 1968 and finished in special-ordered Burgundy over a Black leather interior. This exquisite 911 was ordered with many special options including short-ratio Nurburgring gears, 911 S gauges, chrome wheels and more. Just released from a prominent Porsche collection where it was subject to a no-expense-spared rotisserie restoration by marque experts to show level standards, this investment-grade Porsche 911 Targa is among one of the finest restored examples we’ve seen to date! During the restoration process, the numbers matching engine was completely rebuilt to 911 S specifications, making this an extremely enjoyable vehicle to drive! With a rare special ordered color, option configuration, and show quality restoration, I personally believe the investment potential of this sought-after Soft-Window 911 Targa will grow beyond your imagination. Offered to the most demanding collector, investor, or enthusiast who desires to own one of the very best!
